“The Crowd Kind Of Shocked Me A Little Bit”: Caitlin Clark Fan Environment In Fever Games Shocked DeWanna Bonner, Recalls Christine Brennan

It’s no surprise that one of the reasons behind DeWanna Bonner‘s departure from the Indiana Fever was due to the Caitlin Clark effect. On Wednesday, reporter Christine Brennan revealed a moment from last May that had Bonner totally shocked at how widespread Clark’s impact is.

On her X/Twitter, Brennanshared Bonner’s comment surrounding the Fever’s match against the Chicago Sky during the season opener. Perhaps the biggest highlight of that game was when Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese had a brawl in the third quarter. The WNBA soon kept track of this and launched an investigation over the alleged hateful comments on Reese. The league soon dropped it since there was not enough evidence.

“A thought: After her first home game w/the Fever May 17, DeWanna Bonner, 37, said: ‘The crowd kind of shocked me a little bit. This is my first time playing in this kind of environment.’ It’s true. The interest in Caitlin Clark’s team is like that of a men’s major-league team,” Brennan tweeted.

Bonner notably left the Fever following her five-game consecutive absence from the team’s games due to “personal reasons,” which both sides haven’t fully revealed. A Tuesday report from Front Office Sports’ Annie Costabile revealed that the two-time WNBA champion wants to leave the team since she “wasn’t fit” with Indiana’s roster.

However, despite the sad announcement, Bonner once praised Caitlin Clark for being the Fever’s role model and hopes for the team’s success.

“She does a lot for this team, and we understand that,” Bonnersaid last April. “I think everybody here just wants to make her life easier, and she wants to make everybody else’s life easier. I’m ready to put it all together. Our relationship is going great, I love C.”

“I wish the Fever great success as they continue to build around this dynamic group of young players,” Bonner said on Wednesday.

Fever HC makes brutal admission to another Caitlin Clark injury

Speaking before Thursday’s match against the LA Sparks, head coach Stephanie White announced that Caitlin Clark will be out for a while due to a groin injury. White said:

“I think anytime you lose a player like Caitlin that’s going to be out of the lineup, you definitely have to adjust things. Fortunately for us, the timing of having Aari (McDonald) back helps with that because she has been in the system. She does understand what we want out of the system. And the last time she was here, I think Caitlin was out as well. For us, having that familiarity is really good.”

Fans could hope that Caitlin Clark will come back soon. The Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Friday.
