As massive waves approached the island of Maui, panic broke out among coastal residents trying to evacuate to higher ground. The only direct escape route from Wailea to Kula — a private road owned in part by media mogul Oprah Winfrey — remained closed to the public. Amidst the chaos, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) took to social media with a direct and urgent call to action: “Open the road, Oprah! People are trapped!”
Her message, shared with millions, rapidly gained traction. The sentiment was echoed by residents and activists alike, who accused the wealthy elite of prioritizing private interests over public safety in a moment of crisis.
“Lives are at stake. No gate, no fence, no ownership should come before human survival,” AOC tweeted, triggering a wave of national attention and sparking the hashtag #OpenTheRoadOprah.

Oprah Responds — But the Public Backlash Was Swift
Shortly after AOC’s public plea, Oprah’s team released a statement claiming she had authorized temporary access to the road for emergency responders and evacuees. Drones were deployed to monitor traffic and volunteers were stationed to guide vehicles.
However, instead of calming tensions, Oprah’s response ignited further outrage.
Photos and videos soon surfaced showing barricades still intact and residents being turned away by private security. Accusations of “performative philanthropy” and “PR over people” flooded social media, with many questioning why it took public shaming for action to be taken at all.
“It wasn’t charity. It was too little, too late,” said Leilani K., a Kīhei local who was forced to flee inland on foot.
A Symbol of Inequality?

Critics say the situation exemplifies the broader issue of inequality during climate disasters — where access to safety becomes a matter of wealth and ownership. Oprah, often praised for her humanitarian work, now finds herself at the center of a firestorm that could tarnish her legacy.
Meanwhile, AOC doubled down, urging Hawaiian lawmakers to “pass legislation that guarantees public right-of-way during any emergency — no exceptions, no excuses.”
The Road Ahead
As Maui begins to recover, the controversy lingers. The question remains: will this moment lead to lasting change, or fade into another viral episode of performative outrage?
For many stranded residents, one thing is clear: next time, the road better be open — before the waves come.
