Sophie Cunningham’s Podcast Delivers Laughs, Rivalries, and Raw Honesty: From Guarding Jonquel Jones to Hating Kansas
It started off lighthearted, almost goofy. On the latest episode of her Show Me Something podcast, Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham sat down with co-host Wes to take fan questions from a voicemail line they had set up for listeners. What followed was a blend of sports talk, comedy, and unfiltered personal commentary that only Cunningham could deliver — equal parts playful and brutally honest.
Facing the Toughest Matchups
The first fan caller, Elizabeth from Missouri, had both a question and a challenge for Cunningham: Who’s your least favorite player to guard in the WNBA? And, just for fun, Would you play me in a game of HORSE?
Cunningham laughed but didn’t hesitate with her answer. “I’d have to say Jonquel Jones from New York,” she admitted. “She’s just so strong and tall and just good. I kind of get put in that position as a small forward sometimes to guard her, and it’s just never good.”
But when it came to the challenge, Cunningham was all in. “I’m so down. You sound confident, and it kind of makes me nervous,” she told Elizabeth.
Her strategy in HORSE? Not flashy trick shots, but simple, relentless execution. “I beat so many people off layups,” she explained. “If you do them enough, people will miss. I like to mentally break people down. That’s killer instinct.” Then, with her trademark sense of humor, she added: “Maybe that’s why I’ve never kept a boyfriend.”
The Border War Is Back
The next voicemail came from John, a fan hyped about the upcoming Missouri–Kansas rivalry game, often called the “Border War.” Just hearing the words sent Cunningham into a frenzy.
“If my knee was good, I’d be jumping around this apartment right now,” she said, referencing her recovery from recent knee surgery. “I am so pumped for the Border War. God, I hate Kansas. I hate him. I hate him. Inject Mr. Brightside into my veins. I’m so hyped.”
For those unfamiliar, the Missouri–Kansas rivalry goes back more than a century, rooted not only in sports but in the actual Civil War. Cunningham dove into the history, explaining how the states have despised each other since the 1800s, when Missouri militias and Kansas “Jayhawkers” clashed violently.
Growing up in Missouri, she recalled just how heated the games were. “I was in seventh or eighth grade. Mizzou was ranked No. 4, KU was No. 2. They played at Arrowhead Stadium. Chase Daniel, Jeremy Maclin, Sean Witherspoon — all those dudes. It was the best rivalry game I’ve ever seen.”
The bitterness ran so deep in her family that they refused to even buy gas or groceries in Kansas. “My aunt used to live there for work, but we would always wait until we got back on the Missouri side to spend money,” she laughed. “Everyone where I grew up hates Kansas. It’s just how it is.”
Even though she admitted that Kansas City, Lawrence, and other parts of the state are nice, she couldn’t hold back her competitive instincts. “I absolutely [expletive] hate Kansas,” she repeated, unapologetic as ever.
Dating Advice… From Sophie?
Later in the episode, the tone shifted when a listener asked for dating advice. He explained that he had met a woman at a church-related work conference, they had started seeing each other, and she was flying in to visit him soon. He wanted to know: Is this a dumb idea, or should I keep enjoying it?
Cunningham and Wes could hardly contain their laughter. “First off, you probably couldn’t have called two worse people for advice,” Sophie joked. But then she leaned into the question.
“Look, if you’re both having fun, she’s flying in, and you guys like each other, then keep doing it and see what happens,” she said. “There’s something hot about meeting at a conference. It’s kind of taboo. It’s fun. Just don’t lie about it. Keep it 100.”
Her co-host chimed in with his own take, even going so far as to jokingly plan future trips for the mystery couple. “What if you guys have a conference in Tampa in a few months? You could do a boat day, drink some margaritas,” he suggested.
Cunningham, however, did raise one caution. “The only thing that makes me nervous about conferences is that people sometimes cheat at them,” she admitted. “I’m not for cheaters. But if you’re both single, go for it. Why wouldn’t you? If you bring joy to each other, then keep enjoying it.”
From there, the conversation spiraled — as most of Sophie’s podcasts do — into jokes about Applebee’s, Chili’s, mozzarella sticks, margaritas, and whether they should join the listener and his new flame on their next trip.
Sophie at Her Realest
The episode ended the way only Sophie Cunningham could end it: with blunt honesty and humor. She admitted she’s officially off pain medication from her surgery but joked about whether she should “take one last laxative to really clean things out.” And then, before signing off, she came back to the rivalry that had her fired up all episode.
“I enjoy a lot of things in life, and I love a lot of things,” she said. “I’m not really a hater. But I absolutely [expletive] hate Kansas. Show Me. See you.”
Why Fans Love Her
What makes Sophie Cunningham so magnetic is not just her play on the court, but her raw, unfiltered personality off of it. In the span of one podcast episode, she managed to:
Admit which WNBA superstar makes her feel “hopeless” on defense.
Accept a random fan’s HORSE challenge.
Launch into a passionate history lesson on Missouri–Kansas hatred.
Give semi-serious dating advice to a stranger.
Daydream about mozzarella sticks and margaritas.
It’s chaotic, it’s hilarious, and it’s undeniably Sophie. The podcast may be called Show Me Something, but every episode ends up showing fans exactly why they love her: she’s real, relatable, and never afraid to say what’s on her mind.
Whether it’s talking basketball matchups, age-old rivalries, or accidental love counseling, Sophie Cunningham brings her unique mix of fire and fun to everything she does. And if there’s one thing listeners walked away from this episode knowing for certain, it’s this: she will never, ever stop hating Kansas.
