Former Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball head coach Lisa Bluder offered an in-depth take on the ultimate weakness in Caitlin Clark’s otherwise all-world game.
Bluder coached Clark at Iowa for four seasons (2020-21 to 2023-24), with the pair helping the Hawkeyes to consecutive national championship game appearances in 2023 and 2024. Bluder retired from coaching last year.
Clark has emerged as the face of the WNBA since the Indiana Fever drafted her first overall a year ago. Known as the “Caitlin Clark effect,” the 23-year-old has single-handedly increased the league’s global following.
On Thursday night, Bluder appeared on the broadcast of Indiana’s road game against the Atlanta Dream and offered her analysis of Clark’s game. Bluder explained that she thinks “the backdoor cut” is the main issue in Clark’s game:
“I just would love to see her coming off a few more screens, Caitlin’s never been great at the backdoor cut. I think that’s something she can really improve on in the future is really try and beat people off that backdoor cut. If they’re gonna face guard her, that’s what you got to do.”

Since Caitlin Clark turned pro, opposing teams have tried to frustrate and knock her off her game by getting physical and handsy. During yesterday’s game, Clark drew a personal foul against Rhyne Howard and was caught saying, “I’m not scared of you.”

Clark had a historically special year in 2024, earning WNBA Rookie of the Year and All-WNBA First Team honors after leading the league in assists. She led Indiana to its first playoff appearance since 2016, though they were swept by the Connecticut Sun in round one.

Clark has picked up where she left off in 2024, averaging 19.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and nine assists per game over Indiana’s first three contests. She’s shooting 43.2 percent from the field, but that number should increase over time.
The Fever will look to improve to 3-1 on the year when they host the New York Liberty on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EST.
