The San Francisco 49ers may look to make a blockbuster trade after losing superstar defensive end Nick Bosa for the season with a torn ACL.

San Francisco’s star defensive end left Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals with a knee injury in the first quarter and did not return. On Monday, the 49ers learned that Nick Bosa suffered a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the year.

This injury comes five years after Bosa tore his ACL in a Week 2, 2020, game against the New York Jets. Bosa was coming off a tremendous rookie year in which he logged nine sacks and won DROY honors, leading the 49ers to a Super Bowl 54 appearance.

With Bosa done for the season, Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard explored potential trade targets for the 3-0 49ers. Kawakami examined possible trade offers for Cincinnati Bengals superstar edge rusher Trey Hendrickson.

“2026 first- and third-round picks and a 2027 second-rounder if Hendrickson plays 60% or more of the 49ers’ remaining defensive snaps this season and the 49ers get to the playoffs and he re-signs with the 49ers.”

Kawakami also floated Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby, Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett and several former 49ers standouts, including Arik Armstead:

“The 49ers would probably like to talk to the Raiders about Maxx Crosby and the Browns about Myles Garrett, but those guys won’t be traded anytime soon. And the 49ers could theoretically check in on some old friends who are on shaky teams: the Saints’ Chase Young, the Jaguars’ Arik Armstead, and the Falcons’ Leonard Floyd, who was released by the 49ers in their salary offload last March.”

San Francisco is no stranger to blockbuster in-season trades under GM John Lynch, who made splashes for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (2019), Christian McCaffrey (2022) and Chase Young (2023).

49ers Should Add Another Stud Pass Rusher With Nick Bosa Out

It’s anybody’s guess how long the 49ers’ championship window will stay open for, but key players like George Kittle (32), Trent Williams (37) and Christian McCaffrey (29) aren’t getting any younger.

San Francisco lacked dynamic edge rushers to complement Nick Bosa last year, hence the first-round pick of Mykel Williams and blockbuster trade for Bryce Huff. The 49ers are 3-0 despite a rash of injuries, and they look every bit like a contender in a wide-open NFC.

Lynch definitely should make a trade for another pass rusher. There’s no guarantee he’ll get a player of Hendrickson’s caliber, but it doesn’t hurt to at least see what the Bengals’ asking price would be.
