With the Indiana Fever leading the Connecticut Sun 55-45 midway through the third quarter, tempers flared after Caitlin Clark was fouled by Sun guard Jacy Sheldon.
As Clark was attempting to shake free from Sheldon at the top of the key, Sheldon reached with her right hand and poked Clark in the eyes. It didn’t appear as though Sheldon was attempting to make a play on the basketball. As Clark was gathering herself following the foul, Sheldon was right there in her airspace.
Clark responded by shoving Sheldon. Naturally, all of it led to a dustup between the Fever and Sun.
Sun forward Tina Charles and Sun guard Marina Mabrey entered the fray. Mabrey came over and collided with Clark, knocking Clark to the floor.
After a lengthy review, Sheldon’s foul was upgraded to a flagrant 1 foul. Meanwhile, Clark, Charles and Mabrey were each assessed technical fouls.

Many fans weren’t pleased with the adjudication on the skirmish and the fact that Mabrey wasn’t ejected.
That sequence led to a late-game retaliation from Fever guard Sophie Cunningham on Sheldon. Cunningham delivered a hard foul on Sheldon that resulted in eventual ejections for Cunningham, Sheldon and Sun guard Lindsay Allen.
