Standing seventh on the points table, it’s hard to say that the Indiana Fever are in a good position at this point. Moreover, the pressure is even higher because the team feels incomplete without their two key guards, Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham.
Clark has been sidelined since May 24, and her return has yet to be confirmed, but there’s a bit of positive news for Fever fans. Cunningham recently addressed the media and provided a crucial injury update on her injured right ankle.
After 2 Weeks Out, Sophie Cunningham Says She’s ‘Feeling Good’
As the Fever (4-5) prepare for their toughest test of the season against the undefeated New York Liberty, all eyes are on the players who are sidelined. The Liberty is currently sitting atop the WNBA standings at 9-0.
This was supposed to be one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the season, largely thanks to the star power of Clark and Cunningham. That’s now up in the air.
Clark is not expected to return anytime soon, but Cunningham recently offered a positive update about her health. After missing five of the team’s first nine games due to a lingering ankle injury, the 28-year-old shooting guard shared encouraging news after Indiana’s practice on June 12.
“I’m feeling really good,” Cunningham told reporters, via Chloe Peterson. “I’m just trying to get clearance for Saturday, and so far, so good.”
Fever Fans React to Cunningham’s Health Update
Cunningham first hurt her ankle during the Fever’s last preseason game on May 10, then made it worse on May 30 while playing against the Connecticut Sun. During a quick two-minute chat with the media, she was also asked if she’ll be ready to face the Liberty. She responded lightheartedly, saying that she’s not sure what’s coming.
“I feel like I’ve been ready to go since it happened,” Cunningham said. “But I’m not a doctor, so it’s up to them.”
Fever fans were quick to weigh in on social media following Cunningham’s update.
“I love the energy of Sophie Cunningham in this interview,” wrote @FroemelAndy. “She is bubbly and bouncing on her feet. The team should not have her play against the Liberty unless Caitlin is playing. They should be a package deal as they aren’t winning without Caitlin, so no need to risk her health.”
Another fan, @michelles2cool, shared the anxiety surrounding Clark’s ongoing absence: “Seems like she’ll be playing Saturday and Caitlin won’t again!! I’m seriously going to cry right now!!”
Despite the uncertainty, some fans praised Cunningham’s spirit.
“For all of those reasons, I will always be a Fever Believer!” said @TJenkins91305. “Sophie, you do an amazing job of keeping up that energy on and off the court. Keep it up. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Sophie will be back out there!!”
Still, the absence of the star rookie continues to dominate the conversation.
One controversial comment drew strong emotions: “At this point, despite the Indiana fans who are loyal, Clark would be better getting the **** out of there from these hate-filled monsters bent on destroying her.”
The Liberty and Fever are scheduled to battle at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on June 14 at 3 p.m. Be sure to check the injury report ahead of tip-off.
