Caitlin Clark’s Team USA Olympics snub was one of the major talking points after the No. 1 pick of the 2024 WNBA Draft made her debut last season. While there was league-wide speculation whether she would make the 12-member roster, Team USA did not select the Indiana Fever rookie.
That said, Clark did have the opportunity to be part of the 3×3 team for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but the former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar declined the dream opportunity. Renowned sports journalist Christine Brennan shed light on the topic in her latest.
Caitlin Clark Declined the Opportunity To Represent Team USA in 3×3 Tournament
In her new book, “On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports,” Brennan wrote that the now-second-year guard had another opportunity to go to Paris. According to People, which carried an excerpt from the book:
“Clark did have another option to get to Paris: the US women’s 3×3 team,” Brennan wrote.
“Even though she had never played on a national 3×3 team (she had experience on U.S. under-16 and under-19 5×5 teams), USA Basketball offered her a spot on the 3×3 team well before June, knowing there was a qualifying event for her to play in to become eligible for the Olympics, according to two sources with knowledge of those conversations.”
She added that Team USA Basketball was wondering if this was a possibility. “Did Clark want to go to Paris on this U.S. team? The answer from Clark and her team was simple: No. She did not want to play 3×3 basketball at the Olympics.”
Earlier, the prolific guard had maintained that she was “not bummed” on missing out on the Olympics.
“I think the break’s been good,” Clark said, according to USA Today. “I think it gives you something to work for and something to dream of. Four years come fast … you gotta start working now if you want that to be your dream. So I think that’s it for me, work hard, and hopefully you can be there.”
On the ongoing season front, it has been a wobbly run for Clark and the Fever. Indiana’s promising start was derailed by an injury to their superstar, and while it looked like they regrouped with impressive wins, they lost two games in a row to slip to seventh in the WNBA standings with a 6-7 record.
