Josh Sborz Shut Down for Remainder of 2023 Seasonv

The Texas Rangers announced on Sunday that reliever Josh Sborz was being shut down for the rest of 2025.

Sborz was attempting to return from offseason shoulder surgery which was expected to cost him at least the first half of the 2025 season. He first went out on a rehab assignment in mid-July, making seven appearances between Frisco and Round Rock from July 12 through July 31, before being pulled off the rehab assignment.

Sborz was sent back out on rehab on August 17, and made five appearances for Round Rock from then through August 30, but his velocity still wasn’t there, and the team shut him down in the hope that a reset would allow him to get his velocity back. That has not happened, though, and the team has opted to shut him down for the year.

Sborz was a huge part of the 2023 World Series team’s bullpen, allowing just one run in 12 innings over 10 appearances in the playoffs, including the final 2.1 innings over the Rangers’ 5-0 Game 5 clincher against the Diamondbacks. He struggled to bounce back in 2024, however, appearing in just 17 games and having several i.l. stints.

The 31 year old righthander still has a year of control remaining after 2025, but will presumably either be waived at the end of the season or non-tendered in December.
