However, the 23-year-old died at the scene.

Salzburg authorities opened an investigation after the incident last Thursday.

Gaiser used to represent the Italian national figure skating team before switching to Austria.

She won consecutive state titles in Salzburg in 2023, 2024 and 2025 while competing for Eis team Salzburg.

Anneliese Schenk from the Italian Ice Sports Federation has hailed Gaiser’s passion for being on the ice.

She said: “She started skating later than usual for our sport – around the age of eight, when many girls begin at just four or five.

“Even so, Marie managed to achieve strong results thanks to her daily training.

“Skating was her whole world, and she lived the sport with immense passion.”
