When Luka Doncic was traded last season, shocking details later emerged about the decision-making process. Reports indicated that minority team owner Mark Cuban wasn’t even aware of the deal until it had already been finalized. By the time he attempted to intervene, the trade had already been arranged and executed by Mavericks GM Nico Harrison.

A recent report revealed Cuban’s diminished role after he sold the franchise. Speaking on The All-In Podcast, Cuban openly admitted that he underestimated how little control he would retain following the sale.

“I f**ked up. I mean, when I did the deal, the presumption was that I would still be running basketball, and we tried to put it in the contract, but the NBA said the governor is the governor, and they make all final decisions. Then you know I was involved. Then we went on this run where we went on this year,” Cuban said.

Beyond the trade itself, Cuban made a stunning revelation about why he ultimately couldn’t remain with the Mavericks after the sale. He pointed directly to internal friction with Nico Harrison.

“We’re rolling, and that was a mistake. So it went; there were some things that happened internally where the person who traded Luka didn’t want me there, and so they won. I lost. Yeah. That’s in the past. I’m still hardcore Mavs,” he added.

“If you have a good team, and you need a killer, you go MJ. If you have a team that’s good and you want them to be better, and as a team go to the Finals, you go LeBron. MJ is not going to lift up a bad team; LeBron can. Like, who would I rather have the last shot? MJ. Who’s going to help your team get better? LeBron,” Cuban said.
