Kyle Shanahan has pulled the plug on the Jake Moody experiment.

The 49ers waived the kicker, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported, per a source informed of the situation. The move was later made official on the league transaction wire.

Moody’s replacement will be veteran Eddy Pineiro, who worked out with the team Tuesday and subsequently signed a contract, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.

Pelissero also reported Tuesday that George Kittle will be placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury from Sunday, forcing the Niners’ star tight end out for at least the next four games. Shanahan announced Monday that Kittle was expected to miss multiple weeks.

While Kittle’s return timeline becomes a little bit clearer, San Francisco’s kicking situation is up in the air.

The Moody move comes after the latest boondoggle from Moody, who missed a short field-goal attempt and had another blocked in Sunday’s 17-13 win in Seattle.

Since the 49ers made him a third-round pick in 2023, Moody has struggled with his accuracy. In his rookie season, he missed four field goal attempts, including three under 50 yards, and went 60 of 61 on point-after attempts. He struggled mightily in 14 games last year, missing 10 of 34 field goal attempts and one PAT.

The Niners brought Greg Joseph into camp to push the 25-year-old kicker, but stuck with their draft pick.

Shanahan gave Moody leash despite the issues. One game into the 2025 season, however, he cut the kicker loose. Thirty-two games was enough.

Now, they’ll see how Pineiro fares. The 29-year-old played the last three seasons with the Panthers and has previous stints with the Bears and Jets. He’s made 111 of 126 career field goals (88.1%) and 92.1% of his extra points (116 of 126).
