PATRICK MAHOMES has sent a defiant message to Travis Kelce following the Kansas City Chiefs’ defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Andy Reid’s troops failed to avenge their Super Bowl 59 loss to the Eagles last Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium last Sunday.

The Chiefs suffered a 20-17 loss to the flying Eagles, who are sure-fire favourites to retain the Vince Lombardi trophy.

Kelce, who recently got engaged to pop superstar Taylor Swift, had a game to forget.

The tight end dropped a potential touchdown pass from Mahomes into the hands of Andrew Mukuba – who returned the ball 41 yards – early in the fourth quarter.

Kelce, 35, cut a frustrated figure after his fumble, which became the talk of NFL fans on social media.

But Mahomes insists the blame for the failed play rests at his feet.

The quarterback said: “‘I just threw it a tad too early.

“Just trying to put it on his body low before that hole player got there.

“I think if I can put it more on his body, and not so far out in front of him, then he can catch it, take the hit, and get in the end zone.”

The 29-year-old added: “You wanna put it low, just more on his body.

“Whenever you’re in those tight quarters like that you wanna give it to them, especially a bigger guy, more on his body where he can catch it [and] brace for that contact.

“We knew the hole player would be looking for him.

“He was breaking to kind of make a hit and it was just unfortunate the ball bounced up in the air and went right to him.”

The Chiefs’ second straight defeat to the Eagles has seen them make an 0-2 start to the new season – the first time that’s happened in the Mahomes era.

Mahomes, Kelce and Co. will look to pick up their first win of the campaign next Sunday when they travel to the MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Giants.
