Caitlin Clark may be a WNBA star, but Sophie Cunningham says she’s really just a big goof. On the Old Man and the Three podcast, Cunningham shared that spending time with Clark feels less like being with a celebrity and more like looking after a younger cousin.

Cunningham has no problem roasting Clark, whether it’s her outfit choices or her habit of acting like the team’s resident kid. She even joked, “Dude, you’re a dweeb. You’re the biggest dork I’ve probably ever met, and just somehow you know how to shoot from far out.”

The playful back-and-forth has turned into one of the league’s more entertaining friendships.

Both Clark and Cunningham spent much of the 2025 season battling injuries. Clark dealt with quad and groin problems, plus a bone bruise in her ankle. Cunningham tore her right MCL. That left the Fever duo on the bench as much as the floor, sharing only 11 games together. But the downtime sparked a bond that Cunningham now calls family-like.

“She loves hard, but at the end of the day she’s like one of my little cousins,” Cunningham said. “She’s just a big kid.”

The off-court chemistry doesn’t erase Cunningham’s respect for Clark’s game. Even during a rocky rookie campaign, she marveled at Clark’s ability to stay three steps ahead of defenses.

“It was really cool to kind of see how her brain works when you’re in the fight with her,” Cunningham explained. “There’s just some things you can’t teach. And she has a lot of those things.”

Clark, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, managed only 13 appearances in a season cut short by repeated setbacks. Cunningham noted that the shooting struggles were expected given the circumstances.

“You’re never just going to always be on up here,” she said, pointing out that Clark still found ways to elevate teammates even when her shots weren’t falling.

It’s not the first time Cunningham has shown she isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Just recently, she made comment about Angel Reese and the state of the Chicago Sky locker room

Clark might find the teasing a little tough sometimes, but Cunningham’s mix of honesty and care helps keep her grounded. And if it’s up to Cunningham, Clark won’t be getting an easy pass for her ego anytime soon.
