The Washington Commanders Are Officially Moving - NewsBreak

The Washington Commanders are officially moving. Sort of.

Don’t worry, longtime Commanders fans. They’re not relocating to a different market. After a long wait and tireless work, the NFC East team finally got approval for the construction of a brand new stadium.

Per David Aldridge of The Athletic, D.C. City Council voted 11-2 in favor of a new $3.8 billion stadium for the Washington Commanders. The stadium, to be built on the site of the legendary Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, will have a capacity of 65,000 and will open by 2030.

Washington Commanders majority owner Josh Harris shared the following statement, per the team’s official website:

“Today is a historic day for D.C., the Commanders organization, and our fans. With the Council’s approval, we can now move forward on the transformative RFK project that will bring lasting economic growth for our city. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and collaboration between Mayor Bowser, Chairman Mendelson, the Council and the countless community, business and labor leaders whose voices and input helped shape the process every step of the way.

We are deeply grateful for the warm return to the District and the center of the DMV, and look forward to officially bringing the team back to its spiritual home in 2030.”

The Commanders have been playing at Northwest Stadium since 1997. It has been regarded as one of the worst NFL stadiums for years, and disgraced former owner Dan Snyder could not secure a new stadium deal before mercilessly selling the team and leaving the league altogether in 2023.

During Dan Snyder’s 24 years as owner of the Washington Commanders, the club never topped 10 wins in a season and won just two playoff games. And yet, it took only year two of the Josh Harris era for the Commanders to top everything Snyder accomplished in 24 seasons.

Led by Jayden Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders finished 12-5 last season and won two playoff games. They went to the NFC Championship for the first time since 1991, losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Washington Commanders.

As the Commanders and their long-suffering fans enjoy a return to title contention, the organization now gets to celebrate a brand new stadium that will be here in five years.

Washington hosts the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday, looking to improve to 2-1 on the season. It’s unclear if Jayden Daniels (knee) will play.
