It appears that Bill Belichick’s tenure as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels won’t even last a full season.

After one year out of football, Bill Belichick was hired as the new head coach of the Tar Heels football team last year. Belichick worked various analyst roles in 2024 after his departure from the New England Patriots.

Saturday’s 38-10 loss to the Clemson Tigers dropped UNC to 2-3 on the season. All three of the Tar Heels’ losses have been by 24-plus points, with their two wins coming against the 3-3 Richmond Spiders and 1-4 Charlotte 49ers.

Now, the legendary head coach and the Tar Heels appear ready to end their tumultuous working relationship mutually, 10 months after signing a contract reportedly worth five years, according to ESPN.

According to a report from Ollie Connolly of The Guardian, the Tar Heels “hierarchy” and Belichick have had conversations about buyout options. Connolly added that Belichick has indicated “a willingness to trigger his own $1 million buyout if he can find a soft landing with another team or in media.”

Some coaches have talked to other elite programs about coming aboard, with an assistant coach saying “What we’ve done to these kids is f**ked up.”

Widely regarded as the greatest head coach in NFL history, it seemed like a wise idea at the time for the Tar Heels to hire Belichick to fix their football program. But it’s clearly not working at Chapel Hill, and the best bet at this point is for the two sides to cut their losses and part ways ASAP.

His high-profile relationship with Jordon Hudson has generated numerous plenty of backlash, with many believing she’s become a distraction. Belichick is 49 years older than Hudson and has made plenty more public appearances with her, whereas he was mainly private outside of football during his time with the Patriots.

At any rate, Belichick and the Tar Heels seem to agree that this isn’t working out, and that there’s little reason to believe it’ll turn around.
