The Boston Celtics are heading into a season full of unexpected troubles. With Jayson Tatum out for the year due to an Achilles injury and a thinner roster following the departures of key stars, the focus is on Jaylen Brown. While expectations are high, one centric legend questions whether Brown can carry the load.

Bob Ryan, one of Boston’s most respected basketball media personalities, expressed his skepticism on his podcast. Ryan praised Brown’s talent but did not consider him a top-tier leader. He predicts a tough road for the Celtics without Tatum anchoring the lineup.

“I like him, he’s fine. He’s a wonderful player,” Ryan said. “But I agree, there’s a level of hierarchy in all sports. He’s at the next level, the very good level. But he’s not at that level, I don’t think. Just a chance to prove everybody wrong. That’s no problem… But they’re going to be lucky in that 7–8 mix.”

Ryan is not alone in this concern. Hall of Famer Bob Cousy recently stated a similar sentiment. The Celtics unexpectedly collapsed by trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and they are now headed toward a rebuild. With Eastern Conference rivals improving, Brown must now prove he is not only a role player but also a consistent leader as a captain.

Jaylen Brown is recovering well after knee surgery following the Celtics’ 2025 playoff exit. He played through a meniscus issue during the season but still averaged 22.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 63 games.

With an unfamiliar roster, Boston mostly relies on Brown as their top option. That makes his full recovery even more important heading into the new season.

Brown was seen dunking during an exhibition game in China. While not at full speed, it’s a strong sign that he is on track to return for training camp.
