This offseason, the Atlanta Hawks had the opportunity to offer star guard Trae Young a staggering $229 million contract extension. However, the front office chose not to pursue that path. The decision has reportedly left Young frustrated. The move signals that Atlanta may look to take a more measured approach in evaluating their roster and long-term plans.

Rumors have pointed to the Orlando Magic as the favorites should Young explore options outside Atlanta. Despite this, sources suggest that the Hawks have no intention of facilitating any trade that would make it easier for Young to leave the team.

Meanwhile, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Atlanta is keen to examine further the on-court chemistry between Young and the team’s rising talent, Jalen Johnson.

“Addendum from me: I’m told that the Hawks are eager to see more of Young alongside versatile swingman Jalen Johnson—who was limited to 36 games last season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury—as they make determinations about their big-picture future,” Stein wrote.

Young and Johnson spent their entire NBA careers with Atlanta, with Young joining in 2018 and Johnson arriving in 2021. The Hawks appear determined to gauge the duo’s potential impact before making any long-term decisions.

On the Big Shot Bob podcast, former NBA star Robert Horry openly criticized the Hawks for hesitating to extend Trae Young.

“You know what? That is the weirdest situation ever. You look at what Trae does on the court, and he’s still hated. There are so many people that aren’t fans of his, and I don’t know why. But it’s hard to trade a player like Trae. Teams are afraid of him. You look at him: he’s a liability on the defense. He’s so little, and he’s a niche player,” Horry said.

Since joining Atlanta, Young has showcased flashes of elite athleticism. Last season, he averaged 24.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Despite this, discussions regarding a new contract are expected to progress slowly.
