Sophie Cunningham suffered a frustrating injury midway through the Indiana Fever’s win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
The injury was particularly frustrating for Cunningham’s family as her sister and mother blasted the WNBA for not protecting their players.
On Sunday, Kelsey Mitchell went from dud to stud. She scored 38 points and added six assists as the Fever clinched a 99-93 win over the Sun in overtime. All of her points came after a scoreless first quarter.
Aliyah Boston also enjoyed a dominant performance, pairing 14 points with 13 rebounds as the Fever bounced back from successive defeats.
However, in the second quarter, Sophie Cunningham was forced to exit the game when Sun player Bria Hartley fell awkwardly into her.
The 29-year-old, who recently celebrated a birthday, clutched her right knee as she fell to the court in visible pain.
Now, it seems as if Hartley may have done this on purpose.
One picture online shows the Sun star smiling as Cunningham grabbed her right knee in pain.
Not long after the injury occurred, Cunningham’s sister Lindsey challenged the WNBA to “focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you .@sophaller.”
Sophie Cunningham’s mother, Paula, directed her ire at Hartley, describing her as “a disgruntled player having trouble everywhere she goes; she’s plain mean and plays out of control.”
Cunningham appeared to be in good spirits and remained active on social media as she watched Mitchell from the locker room and delivered a bold message.
“KELSEY FREAKIN MITCHELL,” posted Cunningham.

Sophie Cunningham joined her Indiana Fever teammate Caitlin Clark on the sideline after she suffered an injury to her right knee Sunday.
Cunningham was scheduled for an MRI on Monday.
Any missed time would be terrible as she has been a vital part of the Fever this season, averaging 8.6 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game in his first season in Indiana.
