NFL fans are growing concerned following a worrisome injury update on Los Angeles Rams star quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The 37-year-old Stafford is recovering from a herniated disc and was kept out of Monday’s practice, despite head coach Sean McVay telling reporters on Sunday that he would work individual drills.

Los Angeles explored Stafford trades in the offseason, but both sides decided to continue the partnership for a fifth season. But the nagging back injury is understandably leading to some concern from Rams fan, and Monday’s update certainly doesn’t help matters.

ESPN’s Sarah Barshop reported from practice on Monday afternoon that Matthew Stafford wasn’t practicing and showed up in street clothes. That led to some hot takes and concerning reactions from fans, including a call to trade for Kirk Cousins or Shedeur Sanders.

“Trade for Shedeur,” one fan wrote.

“Kirk cousins inbound. He’ll hold it down before Stafford comes back and takes them to the nfc championship shop,” said another.

“He’s out for the year, McVay is playing games as usual,” wrote a fan.

“Jimmy G come on down!!!!!,” said a user.

“Stafford in street clothes instead of drills is definitely eyebrow-raising 🤔 McVay’s plan might’ve just hit a snag. #Rams,” another said.

“oh boy,” a fan commented.

Only time will tell if the Rams are trying to downplay the potential severity of Matthew Stafford’s injury, or if he’ll actually return soon. Nonetheless, it’s something to monitor in the coming days.

Don’t forget that the Indianapolis Colts were tight-lipped about Peyton Manning’s serious neck injury in 2011. It was evident from the get-go that he wouldn’t be able to play that year, yet the Colts didn’t confirm he’d miss the entire season until December.

The Rams open the 2025 season at home against CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans on Sept. 7 (4:25 p.m. EST).

The Rams have to be ready for the possibility of Stafford missing time in the regular season. The Colts didn’t have a good backup plan in 2011, prompting them to bring Kerry Collins out of retirement before an injury forced the club to use career backup Curtis Painter.

LA has a seasoned veteran in Jimmy Garoppolo as a backup, so he should get plenty of first team reps until/unless Stafford is cleared for a return.
