Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, has opened up on the back of some heartbreaking personal news, announcing the passing of his grandmother in an emotional social media tribute.
McCaffery’s political affiliation has gone viral in the past and even drawn criticism from some. The 27-year-old is now a basketball coach at Butler University after a career as a player at Iowa.
His grandmother, Marit Smaby-Nowlin, has passed away at the age of 80, prompting him to take to Instagram to post a photo of her holding him when he was a young boy.
“I’ve been trying to think of what to say and I can’t,” he wrote. “It’s impossible to put into words how much you meant to our entire family. I refuse to say goodbye, so until we meet again.”
Clark commented on the post, shown below, with several heart emojis.

The Minnesota Star Tribune notes that emergency responders got a call summoning them to Lake Vermilion in Minnesota on Wednesday, where McCaffery’s grandmother was found unresponsive.
They observed family members trying to revive her upon arrival, before they took her back to the shore and then Cook Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Smaby-Nowlin is said to have been on vacation with other family members at the time.
Connor and Caitlin have been together since April 2023. Rumors of a potential breakup after their curious interaction at the recent WNBA All-Star game have since been unfounded, with her reaction to Connor’s post also suggesting otherwise.
