The New York Yankees hosted their first Old-Timers Day game after six years. The last time the franchise had organized the event was in 2019. It was the 77th Old-Timers Day to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the team’s World Series title in 2000.

A mix of World Series Champions, Hall of Famers, and legendary Yankees stars participated in the event. However, Derek Jeter was notably absent for various reasons. It was a day to remember as the old-timers got together to entertain fans.

One among many stars was Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera. While he started out having a good time, Rivera’s celebration ended on a sour note. The five-time World Series champion ran after a fly ball and tore an Achilles tendon, trying to make the play.

Sadly, the Yankees legend will need to undergo surgery within a week. Rivera played great while he singled off his former teammate Andy Pettitte. Roger Clemens was also among the squad for the Old-Timers Day. Clemens stated they were having a great time until they heard about Rivera’s injury.

“It was a fun day until we heard about Mariano. Mariano hurt his Achilles tendon. I don’t know what was going on. We all thought it was a hamstring, but I think it’s a little worse than that. I think he’s at the hospital now. Unbelievable,” Roger Clemens said via ESPN.

Rivera stated that he wanted to speak with Yankees closer Devin Williams, who has been struggling with pitching this season.

The Bronx Bombers finally recorded a much-needed win against the Houston Astros. The Yanks tied the series after a 5-4 victory. The team’s struggles have been constant over the last month, and they are currently fighting for a Wild Card spot.

It’s been a rough ride after the All-Star break, and fans are calling for the franchise to fire manager Aaron Boone. The Yankees are still 5.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays and third in the AL East division.

Yankees fans are eagerly hoping for a change with their latest additions to the team. David Bednar seems to be doing a fine job as a closer.
