Doug Lebda, the founder and CEO of lending firm LendingTree, tragically passed away in a horrific incident described as an “all-terrain vehicle” accident on Sunday.
Lebda was 55.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the crash occurred at his family’s farm in North Carolina, but no other information was made available.
His wife, Megan, has released a statement lauding his compassion and highlighting the legacy he left behind.
“Our hearts are broken, but we are also deeply grateful for the love and support that has poured in from across the world,” she said. “Doug’s legacy will continue in the company he founded, the lives he touched, and the example he set for all of us to lead with kindness, courage, and compassion.”
The fatality is one of two notable ATV-related deaths to take place over the last few months. A former college basketball star suffered a similar fate back in June.

Lebda founded LendingTree in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina. His personal frustrations with getting his first mortgage inspired the company’s creation.
It went online two years later and became a publicly traded company in 2000. It was later bought by IAC/InterActiveCorp, but took off on its own again in 2008.
The marketplace facilitates links between borrowers and loan operators, allowing the former to shop for loans, credit cards, deposit accounts, insurance, and more. They can also compare rates and terms across a range of financial products.
Scott Peyree, the company’s chief operating officer and president, has been named CEO following Lebda’s unexpected passing.
“Doug was a visionary leader whose relentless drive, innovation, and passion transformed the financial services landscape, touching the lives of millions of consumers,” LendingTree’s board of directors said. “His passion will continue to inspire us as we move forward together.”
Lebda was a father of three.
TPS extends condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
May he rest in peace.
