The frustration inside Yankee Stadium on Sunday was as visible as it was loud. During the team’s yet another painful loss against the Houston Astros, several fans wore paper bags over their heads, showing their frustration with the team’s struggles and the growing calls for change in the dugout.

The Yankees closed their series against the Houston Astros with a 7-1 defeat, marking their third straight series loss. Frustrated Bronx fans wore paper bags over their heads with the words “Boone is a Buffoon” written across them, a clear sign of growing anger toward the manager amid the team’s ongoing slump.

Since June 13, New York has gone just 20-31, a slump that has put their playoff hopes at risk. After the brutal loss in Game 3, the 2024 World Series runners-up briefly fell out of a playoff spot before a Guardians loss pushed them back into the third Wild Card position by just half a game.

Manager Aaron Boone’s afternoon ended early after a third-inning ejection for arguing a strike call, but he didn’t dodge the reality postgame. However, the under-fire Yankees manager still believes that the team will turn around their season and reach the playoffs.

“I wholeheartedly believe that we are going to get rolling and turn this thing around. When it does, then you start to really build that next layer of confidence,” Boone said.

Meanwhile, captain Aaron Judge, who has struggled since his return from the IL, made an honest assessment of his team’s performance and admitted that the players are not “doing their job.”

“We’re getting paid to go out there and win… we’re not doing our job.”

Sunday’s loss left the Yankees 6 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East and clinging to the final Wild Card spot. New York now turns its attention to a three-game home set against the Minnesota Twins, starting on Monday.
