Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has admitted to being “hurt” over his father’s arrest prior to Super Bowl 58 in 2024.
Mahomes was preparing for one of the biggest games of his career, a curtain-closer against then-NFC champions the San Francisco 49ers in early 2024, when he learned that his old man had been arrested in Texas for driving while intoxicated for the third time.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. was charged with the offense and pleaded guilty later in the year. Despite his legal troubles, he was allowed to travel to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl showdown. And, in spite of the mental toll, his son managed to lead the Chiefs to a 25-22 victory.
The Chiefs star opened up on the matter in an ESPN docuseries called ‘The Kingdom’. The six-episode doc will launch on August 14.

According to quotes transcribed by the New York Post, Mahomes said it caused him some grief, but at the same time, it was a wake-up call for his dad, who has since taken on a sobriety journey.
“It was during that Super Bowl week. It became a story and so I had to answer questions about it,” Mahomes said. “I think just knowing that it hurt me, woke him up to know that like you can’t keep doing the same things.”
“It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I’ve ever been through in my life,” Mahomes Sr. said. “I called him right after … I said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry that it’s taken away from your time and focus.’ … I made a vow that he would never have to deal with anything because of drinking because of me. I haven’t had a drink since then.”
As mentioned above, ‘The Kingdom’ will premiere on August 14. It will be available to watch on ESPN+ and Disney+.
