That afternoon, the Chicago sky was unusually blue, the sun pouring gold on the red bricks of Wrigley Field. In front of the main gate, a long line of people lined up, all looking towards “Statue Row” – the path of fame that preserves the greatest faces of the Chicago Cubs.

And today, the name engraved in history is Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins. More than just a statue unveiling ceremony, this is a rare moment when a living legend gets to witness himself become immortal, in bronze, in stone… and in the hearts of millions of fans.

Fergie Jenkins is not only a legendary pitcher, but also a symbol of resilience and perseverance. From 1966 to 1973, he was the heart of the Cubs, winning 20 or more games in 6 consecutive seasons, winning the 1971 Cy Young Award and making his mark with an indomitable playing style. In the Cubs’ less-than-glorious days, Jenkins was a rare beacon of hope for the fans who came to Wrigley Field every day.

The dedication ceremony was a solemn affair. Other Cubs legends, former teammates, and thousands of fans were present. When the blue curtain was pulled back, the bronze statue appeared – an image of Jenkins in his signature pitching stance, eyes focused, body tensed with power.

Jenkins, now 79, stood next to him. His eyes were filled with pride but also with emotion. He shared:

“Not everyone is lucky enough to see a statue of themselves while they are alive. I feel extremely honored, not just for myself, but because I know I represent everyone who has ever worn a Cubs jersey.”

Jenkins’ statue now stands tall alongside other icons like Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, and Ron Santo. “Statue Row” is not only a place to preserve heritage, but also a meeting place of memories – where Cubs fans bring their children and grandchildren to tell stories about the heroes who made history.

Jenkins did not forget to send a message to the younger generation of Cubs players:

“Play like every game is your last. Love Wrigley Field, love these fans, the way we did more than half a century ago.”
