Kevin Durant’s trade to the Houston Rockets came even before free agency officially opened. The two-time NBA champion’s move to the Rockets made headlines as part of a record-breaking seven-team deal. The move instantly became one of the most talked-about transactions of the offseason.
Naturally, fans expected the franchise to secure the 36-year-old superstar with a big contract extension. However, nearly a month after the trade, reports surfaced that the Rockets might not be prepared to hand Durant a massive long-term deal. NBA insider Sam Amico highlighted the uncertainty around Durant’s future in Houston.
“Kevin Durant has yet to sign an extension with the Houston Rockets, and nearly two months after arriving from Phoenix, there are no signs that a deal is close. Durant remains headed toward free agency next summer with an expiring contract worth $54.7 million,” Amico wrote.
Reportedly, the Rockets can technically offer Durant a maximum two-year extension valued at $122.1 million. Yet, the NBA’s “over-38 rule” restricts them from going beyond that length.
Even as contract talks stall, Durant continues to prove why he remains one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers. Last season, he averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.
Tim McMahon Shares Rockets’ Reluctance To Give Kevin Durant A Contract Extension

On ESPN’s The Hoop Collective, Tim McMahon provided more context. He suggested that Houston is hesitant to make a hasty decision.
“The Rockets aren’t going to go all-in—by all appearances and by what I’ve heard—they’re not going all-in on an extension for Kevin Durant. Now, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. But there have been rumblings of, ‘Hey, KD is not going to push for the full max.’ I don’t know that the Rockets are going to put anything on the table that’s close to the max,” McMahon wrote.
The Rockets may be cautious about committing to Durant in the long term. But there is no denying that his presence instantly elevates their competitiveness in the Western Conference.
