Pittsburgh Pirates flamethrower Paul Skenes is having another stellar season after putting up incredible numbers. The Pirates might not be able to make it to the playoffs, but Skenes has been the bright spot throughout this season.

Given his numbers and consistency, many believe that the pitcher will win the Cy Young Award in 2025. However, he has tough competition with Tarik Skubal. Skenes is probably stuck with the wrong team since the offense is unable to help him win. Despite having a 7-8 record, he holds a stellar 1.94 ERA, which is the best in the league.

Trailing Paul Skenes is Tarik Skubal with a 2.18 ERA. The pitcher is well-noted for his performance and recently the team’s manager Don Kelly shared a secret on how Skenes stays ahead in the game.

“He’s got that knack. Got elite stuff, but when he gets in trouble, he’s able to go to a lot of different things to get out of the inning, to be able to get punchouts or induce double plays. He’s got that feel of a pitcher and has power stuff, but he’s a pitcher, and he’s able to use it to induce a double play or go for the punchout when he needs it. There aren’t many like him,” Kelly said about Paul Skenes via MLB.com.

Not many pitchers have the ability to induce double plays, especially in a crunch situation. However, Skenes has been unique with his technique.

Skenes is coming off one of his best games with the Pirates. He threw six shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds and recorded eight strikeouts with zero walks, according to OptaSTATS. The pitcher tied Jake Arrieta’s 2015 record.

Not many Pirates players have reached such milestones. Paul Skenes is considered a generation’s talent and one of the most feared pitchers in the league. Skenes has 162 strikeouts in 144 innings pitched.

Sadly, the Pirates are at the bottom of the NL Central and will not make the playoffs due to their poor performance.
