Shohei Ohtani had already found himself at the center of an ugly betting scandal involving his former interpreter. Now, the Dodgers’ superstar is facing fresh trouble as he and his agent are accused of undermining a $240 million luxury real estate project in Hawaii.

A lawsuit filed in the Hawaii Circuit Court claims Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, used the star’s influence to disrupt the development of “The Vista at Mauna Kea Resort.” Originally brought in to endorse the project, the complaint claims Ohtani and Balelo made demands so extreme that the developers were forced to sever ties. The plaintiffs say this “tortious interference” caused them substantial financial losses. Ohtani and the agency have not released any public statement yet.

“Balelo and Otani, who were brought into the venture solely for Otani’s promotional and branding value, exploited their celebrity leverage to destabilize and ultimately dismantle Plaintiffs’ role in the project, for no reason other than their own financial self-interest,” the lawsuit claims.

Notably, this is not the first time Ohtani has been involved in off-field controversy. Last year, the Japanese superstar’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, admitted to stealing nearly $17 million from him to pay off personal gambling debts. In February, Mizuhara was sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison and ordered to pay $18 million in restitution. However, MLB cleared Ohtani of any wrongdoing in the matter.

Despite the off-field controversies, Ohtani’s 2025 season has been nothing short of outstanding. He is batting .284 with 42 home runs and 78 RBIs and remains the frontrunner for NL MVP honors. In Monday’s game against the Angels, Ohtani launched his 42nd homer of the year, his third in as many games.

The Dodgers are clinging to the top spot in the NL West with the Padres just one game behind. The 31-year-old will be in action on Tuesday for Game 2 against the Angels.
