The Boston Celtics are reportedly exploring the possibility of trading guard Anfernee Simons, who currently holds an expiring contract. His status makes him an appealing option for teams seeking salary flexibility or a chance to negotiate a significant extension. Sources suggest the Celtics see Simons as a potential solution to ease luxury tax concerns while reshaping their roster.

NBA reporter Sam Amico recently reported that both the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets are reportedly monitoring Simons’ availability this offseason. Yet, new insights from NBA insider Brett Siegel cast doubt on the logic of such interest.

The 76ers are $9.8M from the first apron, have yet to sign Quentin Grimes, and have plenty of backcourt depth they’re high on. The Nuggets just cleared money this offseason for a reason and would need to trade Cam Johnson or Aaron Gordon. That’s not happening,” Siegel reported.

Simons’ acquisition came through the Jrue Holiday trade earlier this offseason. Some analysts interpret it as part of a broader strategy. By adding Simons, the Celtics may have been aiming not only to retool their roster but also to strategically reduce payroll by creating more flexibility for future moves.

The Celtics reportedly explored a trade with the Brooklyn Nets involving Simons. According to NetsDaily, negotiations may have stalled over draft asset demands.

“Reportedly, there was also some level of talks between Nets and Celtics about Simons, but supposedly, Nets wanted too much in draft assets,” the report read.

Before joining the Celtics, Simons spent his entire NBA career with the Portland Trail Blazers. He was selected by the Blazers with the 24th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Last season, he averaged 19.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game.
