Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency has stretched past six weeks, and there is no sign of movement. Negotiations between Kuminga’s camp and the Warriors remained stopped, as per league sources, and the gap between the two sides doesn’t appear to be narrowing. With the October 1 deadline looming, the situation stalled the Warriors’ offseason.
The Warriors offered Kuminga a two-year, $45 million deal, but the second year remained unconfirmed. The contract would also force him to waive his no-trade clause, which gives the Warriors full control over his future. For Kuminga, who is seeking a long-term commitment and a larger role, that structure doesn’t align with his priorities.
Though Kuminga demanded a trade, sources say he would welcome a fresh start. The Warriors, meanwhile, resisted serious sign-and-trade discussions despite interest from several teams, excluding a notable offer from the Sacramento Kings involving Malik Monk and a protected first-round pick.

The unresolved situation is blocking other roster decisions. Golden State is likely to finalize the signings of AI Horford and De’Anthony Melton, but not until the Kuminga issue is settled. The team has no urgency to rush into a bad trade, but it is also not ready to meet Kuminga’s three-year reported counteroffer of $82 million.
If no deal lands, Kuminga could accept the $7.9 million qualifying offer, play out the season, and become an unrestricted free agent next summer. But that move carries major risk. A single injury could derail his market, and the Warriors would lose him for nothing.
The General Manager is playing it patiently, but the clock is ticking. If this standoff stretches into training camp, it could cause deeper tension in the locker room. For a franchise still trying to balance a veteran core with rising talent, the Kuminga standoff is more than just a contract issue; it is a test of direction.
