Anfernee Simons’ time in Boston could be short-lived. The talented guard joined the Boston Celtics last month in the Jrue Holiday trade with the Portland Trail Blazers. However, reports suggest his stay in green and white may not last long.

Simons is entering the final year of a four-year, $100 million contract he signed with Portland in 2022. According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Boston is actively exploring trade possibilities for the scoring guard.

The expectation persists, furthermore, that Boston will continue to invite trade discussion involving Anfernee Simons from now through next season’s trade deadline on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. ET,” Fischer wrote.

One of the biggest factors in this decision appears to be Boston’s aggressive salary cap management. Simons’ acquisition reportedly saved the Celtics $40 million in luxury tax payments for next season. By keeping their payroll leaner, Boston creates more flexibility to add or retain players that better fit their long-term vision.

Simons began his NBA journey in 2018 when the Trail Blazers selected him with the 24th overall pick. His rookie season saw limited action. He appeared in just 20 games, in which he averaged 3.8 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game.

Over the course of seven seasons with Portland, Simons developed into a dynamic scorer. According to Statmuse, he has averaged 15.0 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.5 rebounds in 389 regular-season games.

Last season marked one of his best statistical years. He posted 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. His athleticism has made him an attractive piece for teams in need of offensive firepower. But Boston may see greater value in what he can bring back in a trade.
