After losing his daughter in a fateful surgery, the distraught father unleashed his fury on the attending physician, turning her into a target of hatred and harsh public opinion — but as time passed, medical secrets were revealed, and he gradually came to realize her silent sacrifice, causing his hatred to transform into a dramatic and uncontrollable love.
The rain was falling hard on the day Mike Stacks decided he was going to die. And he stood at his daughter’s grave with water running down his face, mixing with his tears as he whispered, “One more year, baby girl, and then daddy will be with you forever.” And he meant every single word because living without his little Bella was like breathing with broken glass in his lungs.
And every day was torture and every night was worse. and he had made up his mind three months ago that he would end his life on the exact same day she had taken her last breath which was March 15th and today was March 15th of the previous year which meant he had exactly 365 days left to live and he had already planned everything down to the last detail and nothing and no one was going to stop him not even God himself.
Mike was [music] 42 years old with dark hair that was now stre with gray and eyes that used to be warm brown but now looked empty like someone had reached inside him and turned off all the lights. And he used to be a successful businessman who owned three restaurants in the city. But after Bella died, he sold everything and gave most of the money to charity and kept just enough to survive for one year because that was all he needed.
and he had moved into a tiny apartment on the bad side of town because he didn’t deserve comfort or happiness or anything good in this world when his daughter was rotting in the ground at only 7 years old. Bella had been diagnosed with leukemia when she was 5 and they had fought so hard for 2 years with chemotherapy and radiation and experimental treatments.
And Mike had spent every penny he had trying to save her. and he had prayed to every god he could think of. And he had begged and bargained and promised anything if only his little girl could live. But none of it mattered because on March 15th at exactly 3:27 in the afternoon, Bella Rose Staxs had closed her eyes for the last time and Mike’s heart had died right along with her.
His wife Sophia had left him 6 months after the funeral because she said she couldn’t stand looking at him anymore because he reminded her too much of Bella since they had the same eyes and the same laugh and the same way of tilting their heads when they were thinking. And Sophia had moved to California to start a new life.
And Mike didn’t blame her because he couldn’t stand looking at himself in the mirror either, which was why he had covered every mirror in his apartment with black cloth. Mike walked away from the grave and got into his old pickup truck that he had bought after selling his Mercedes because a grieving man didn’t need a fancy car.
and he drove through the rain to the courthouse where he had to report for his community service assignment because 3 months ago he had gotten arrested for punching a man at a bar who had been complaining about how annoying his own kids were. And Mike had seen red and broken the man’s nose and jaw. And the judge had given him a choice between 6 months in jail or 500 hours of community service.
and Mike had chosen the community service because he needed to be free for [music] March 15th and nothing was going to interfere with his plan. The woman at the community service office was named Janet and she was in her 50s with kind eyes and gray hair pulled back in a bun and she looked at Mike with something like pity which he hated more than anything [music] because he didn’t want anyone’s pity.
He just wanted to be left alone to count down the days until he could see his daughter again. “Mr. Staxs,” Janet said while looking at her computer screen, “you’ve been assigned to Riverside General Hospital, and you’ll be working in the pediatric oncology ward, helping with [music] activities and spending time with the patients, and your supervisor will be Dr. Elena Rossy.
” And Mike felt his blood turn to ice in his veins because Riverside General was where Bella had spent her last months and pediatric oncology was the cancer ward for children and Dr. Elena Rossi was the doctor who had failed to save his daughter’s life. “No,” Mike said, and his voice came out like gravel scraping against stone.
“I can’t work there, and you need to assign me somewhere else. Anywhere else I’ll clean toilets. I’ll pick up trash on the highway. I’ll do anything, but I can’t go back to that hospital. Janet looked at him with sympathy, but shook her head and said, “I’m sorry, Mr. Staxs, but this is the only placement available right now, and if you refuse, you’ll have to go back to court, and the judge will probably send you to jail.
” And Mike wanted to scream and throw things and burn the whole building down. but instead he just nodded because he couldn’t go to jail because then his plan would be ruined and he had to be free on March 15th. So he would just have to find a way to survive being in that hospital without losing what was left of his mind.
Mike drove to Riverside General with his hands gripping the steering wheel [music] so tight his knuckles turned white and the memories were crashing over him like waves trying to drown him. And he could see Bella in her hospital bed with tubes coming out of her tiny arms. And he could hear her voice saying, “Daddy, when I get better, can we go to Disney World?” And he could feel her small hands squeezing his as she took her last breath.
And by the time he parked the truck, he was shaking so hard he could barely breathe. He sat in the parking lot for 20 minutes trying to calm down and telling himself that he only had to do this for one year and then it would all be over and he would be with Bella again and nothing else mattered.
And finally, he forced himself to get out of the truck and walk through the sliding glass doors into the hospital that haunted his nightmares. The smell hit him first, and it was that hospital smell of disinfectant [music] and sickness and despair that he remembered so well, and his stomach turned, and he had to lean against the wall for a moment to keep from throwing up.
And a nurse walking by gave him a strange look, but didn’t stop, and Mike forced himself to keep moving toward the elevator that would take him up to the fourth floor where the pediatric oncology ward was located. The elevator doors opened and Mike stepped out into a hallway that was painted with cheerful murals of rainbows and butterflies and cartoon animals.
And he wanted to punch the wall because there was nothing cheerful about this place where children came to suffer and die. And whoever had decided to decorate it like a kindergarten classroom was either stupid or cruel or both. He walked to the nursurse’s station and told them he was there for community service.
[music] And a young nurse with blonde hair pointed down the hall and said, “Dr. Rossy’s office is the third door on the left and she’s expecting you.” And Mike nodded and walked in that direction, feeling like he was walking to his own execution, which was ironic because he was actually walking toward the woman who would unknowingly try to stop his real execution in one year.
He knocked on the door and a voice called out, “Come in.” And Mike pushed the door open and there she was sitting behind a desk covered in papers and files. And Dr. Elena Rossy looked up at him and her dark eyes widened with recognition. And for a moment, neither of them spoke because what do you say to the man whose daughter you couldn’t save? Or to the doctor who watched your little girl die? Elellanena was 38 years old with long dark hair that was currently pulled back in a messy ponytail and olive skin and
high cheekbones and full lips and under different circumstances. Mike might have noticed that she [music] was beautiful, but right now all he could see was the face of the woman who had stood by his daughter’s bed and said, “I’m so sorry, Mr. Staxs, but there’s nothing more we can do.” and he hated her with every fiber of his being.
>> “Mr. Stacks,” >> Elellanena said, and her voice was soft and careful, like she was approaching a wild animal that might attack at any moment. >> “I wasn’t sure you would actually come.” >> And Mike wanted to laugh at the understatement because coming here was the last thing on earth he wanted to do, but instead he just said, >> “I don’t have a choice.
” and his voice was cold and [music] flat and dead just like the rest of him. Elellanena stood up from her desk and she was shorter than he remembered, maybe 5’4 in her white coat and comfortable shoes. And she looked tired with dark circles under her eyes and lines around her mouth that hadn’t been there a year ago.
And Mike wondered briefly if she ever thought about Bella. And then he decided he didn’t care because thinking about it would only make him hate her more. >> I want you to know, >> Elellanena [music] said while walking around the desk to stand in front of him. >> That I requested you specifically for this placement [music] because I think working with the children here could be good for you.
And I know you’re angry with me and you have every right to be. But I hope we can find a way to work together. Mike stared at her in disbelief [music] and his hands clenched into fists at his sides. And he said, “You requested me specifically. And what kind of sick game is this? Because if you think I’m going to thank you for saving the children when you couldn’t save my daughter, then you’re out of your mind.
” And Elena flinched like he had slapped her, but she didn’t back down, and she met his eyes with a steady gaze that was full of something that looked like pain. I’m not playing any games, >> Elena said. >> And I think about Bella every single day, and I wish more than anything that I could have saved her. But cancer doesn’t care about wishes.
And sometimes, no matter how hard we fight, we still lose. And I have to live with that failure for the rest of my life. But I refuse [music] to let it stop me from trying to save the other children. And I refuse to let you give up on life [music] just because you’re drowning in grief. >> Mike took a step closer to her.
And he was much taller and bigger. and he could see her pulse jumping in her throat, but she didn’t move back. And he said, “You don’t know anything about me or my grief. So don’t stand there and pretend like you understand because you can’t understand, and you will never understand what it’s like to watch your child die and feel completely helpless to stop it.
” Elellanena’s eyes filled with tears, but she blinked them back and said, “You’re right that I don’t have children, and I can’t fully understand your pain, but I’ve watched hundreds of children die in this ward. And every single one of them took a piece of my heart with them, including Bella.
And I may not be a parent, but I am a human being who cares. And I’m not going to apologize for trying to help you, even if you hate me for it.” Mike didn’t know what to say to that, so he just stood there staring at her and feeling angry and confused and something else he couldn’t name. And finally, Elellanena cleared her throat and said, “Your first shift starts now, and I’ll show you around and introduce you to the children.
And the rules are simple, which are be kind and be patient and be present. And if you can’t do those three things, then leave because [music] these kids deserve better than someone who’s just going through the motions. She walked past him out of the office and Mike followed her down the hall and she pushed open a door that led into a large playroom filled with toys and games and books and art supplies.
And there were about a dozen children in the room ranging in age from maybe 3 to 12. And some of them were bald from chemotherapy. And some of them had tubes and ports and IVs. And some of them were in wheelchairs. And all of them turned to look at Mike with curious eyes. “Everyone,” Elellanena said with a smile that transformed her whole face. “This is Mr.
Mike, and he’s going to be spending time with us helping out, and I want you all to be nice to him and show him how things work around here.” And a little boy who couldn’t have been more than 5 years old and had no hair and big blue eyes came running up to Mike and grabbed his hand and said, “Hi, Mr.
[music] Mike. I’m Tommy. And do you want to play blocks with me?” And Mike felt his heart crack open just a little bit because [music] Tommy reminded him so much of Bella with his fearless friendliness and his innocent trust in strangers. Mike looked down at Tommy and he wanted to run away and never come back. But Elena was watching him with those dark eyes that seemed to see right through him.
And the other children were watching, too. [music] And Mike found himself kneeling down to Tommy’s level and saying, “Sure, kid. I’ll play blocks with you.” And Tommy’s face lit up like the sun coming out from behind clouds. and he dragged Mike over to a corner where there was a huge pile of wooden blocks and started explaining very seriously that they were going to build the biggest tower in the whole world.
For the next 2 hours, Mike sat on the floor with Tommy and built towers [music] and knocked them down and built them again. And other children came over to join them. [music] And there was a girl named Sophia who was eight and wore a pink bandana over her bald head. And a boy named Marcus who was 11 and had to carry an IV pole everywhere he went.
And twins named Rosa and Maria who were six [music] and finishing each other’s sentences. And Mike found himself actually laughing at something one of them said. and the sound was so foreign to his ears that he [music] stopped in shock because he couldn’t remember the last time he had laughed. Elellanena was watching from across the room and she had a small smile on her face and Mike caught her eye and quickly looked away because he didn’t want her to think this changed anything because it didn’t. and he still hated her and he
still hated this hospital and he was still going to die in one year and nothing and no one was going to change his mind about that. Not even a room full of brave little kids who were fighting for their lives. When his shift was over, Mike practically ran out of the hospital and he drove straight to a bar and ordered whiskey after whiskey until the bartender cut him off.
And then he stumbled home to his tiny apartment and lay on his mattress on the floor and stared at the ceiling and thought about Tommy and Sophia and Marcus and the twins. And he thought about how unfair it was that children had to suffer and die. And he thought about Bella and how she had been the bravest of them all.
And he fell asleep with tears running down his face and her name on his lips. The next day, Mike woke up with a pounding headache and a sick feeling [music] in his stomach. And he wanted to stay in bed and never get up again. But he had to go back to the hospital [music] because that was the deal. And if he didn’t show up, they would send him to jail.
And so he dragged himself out [music] of bed and took a cold shower and drank three cups of black coffee and drove back to Riverside General [music] to face another day in hell. This time when he got to the playroom, Tommy was waiting for him at the door. And the little boy’s face lit up when he saw Mike and he said, “Mr. Mike, you came back and I was scared you wouldn’t come back because sometimes people don’t come back.
” And there was something in his voice that made Mike’s chest tight. And he realized that Tommy was talking about more than just visitors. And Mike knelt down and looked the boy in the eyes and said, “I’ll come back, kid. I promise.” and he meant it at least for the next year until his plan was complete. Days turned into weeks and Mike fell into a routine where he would wake up and go to the hospital and spend time with the children and then go to a bar and drink until he couldn’t feel anything and then go home and pass out and do it all over again the next day.
And the only bright spots in his existence were the hours he spent with Tommy and Sophia and Marcus and the twins and the other children who came and went from the ward as they got better or got worse or died. Mike learned that Tommy had a rare form of brain cancer [music] and his prognosis wasn’t good.
But the little boy never seemed scared or sad. And he always had a smile on his face. And he always wanted to play blocks or tell jokes or listen to Mike read stories. [music] And Mike found himself looking forward to seeing Tommy everyday, which was terrifying because he couldn’t afford to care about another child who might die and break his heart all over again.
Elellanena was always there [music] watching and helping and asking Mike questions about himself that [music] he refused to answer. And she had this annoying habit of bringing him coffee every morning exactly the way he liked it with two sugars and no cream. Even though he had never told her how he took his coffee, and when he asked her how she knew, she just shrugged and said, “I’m observant.
” With a little smile that made him want to shake her. One day about 2 months into his community service, Mike was sitting in the playroom reading a book to a group of children when Elena came in and pulled him aside and said, “Tommy’s parents want to meet you because he talks about you all the time and they want to thank you for making their son so happy.
” And Mike felt panic rising in his chest because meeting Tommy’s parents felt like getting too involved and getting too close and caring too much. but he couldn’t say no without looking like a jerk. So, he just nodded and followed Elena down the hall to Tommy’s room. Tommy’s parents were named Frank and Maria, and they were both in their 30s.
And they looked exhausted and scared and heartbroken, just like Mike had looked when Bella was sick. And Mike saw himself in Frank’s eyes. And it was like looking into a mirror that showed his own pain reflected back at him. Thank you so much for spending time with Tommy, Maria said while wiping tears from her eyes.
And he loves you so much and he says you’re his best friend and we just wanted you to know how much it means to us that he has someone who makes him smile. And Mike didn’t know what to say, so he just mumbled, “He’s a great kid.” and shook their hands and got out of there as fast as he could before he completely fell apart. Later that day, Elellanena found Mike sitting alone in the hospital chapel, staring at the stained glass window, and she sat down next to him without saying anything.
And they sat in silence for a long time until Mike finally said, “I can’t do this because I can’t get attached to these kids knowing they might die, and I already went through that once, and it destroyed me, and I don’t have anything left to give.” Elellanena turned to look at him and said, “I know it’s hard and I know it hurts, but these children need people who care about them.
And sometimes the only gift we can give is our presence and our love. Even knowing it might end in pain. And that’s what makes it valuable because love that risks nothing costs nothing. And these kids deserve love that costs everything.” Mike shook his head and said, “You don’t understand because I’m not a good person and I’m not here to help anyone and I’m just here because the court ordered me to be here and I’m counting down the days until I can leave and never come back.
” And he almost told her about his plan to die on March 15th, but he stopped himself because if she knew, she would probably try to stop him and he couldn’t let that happen. Elellanena studied his face for a long moment and then she said, “I don’t believe you because I’ve seen the way you are with those children and I’ve seen the way they light up when you walk in the room and I’ve seen you stay late to read one more story or build one more tower and whatever you tell yourself about who you are.
The truth is that you’re a man with a good heart who is hiding behind walls of pain [music] and anger. and I’m not going to give up on you just because you’ve given up on yourself. Mike stood up abruptly and said, [music] “Stop trying to save me because I don’t want to be saved and I don’t need your help and I don’t need your pity and I just need you to leave me alone.
” And he walked out of the chapel and out of the hospital. And he didn’t stop until he was sitting in his truck in the parking lot with his hands shaking and his heart pounding and his eyes burning with tears. He refused to let fall. He didn’t go back to the hospital for 3 days and he ignored the phone calls from the community service office.
[music] And he lay in his apartment drinking and staring at the wall and thinking about Bella and thinking about dying and trying not to think about Tommy and Elellanena and the other children who needed him. On the fourth day, there was a knock at his door [music] and Mike ignored it. But the knocking continued. And then he heard Elellanena’s voice saying, “Mike, I know you’re in there and I’m not leaving until you open this door, so you might as well save us both some time.
” And Mike groaned and got up and yanked the door open, ready to yell at her. But the words died in his throat when he saw her face. Elellanena was pale and her eyes were red like she had been crying. And she said, “It’s Tommy and he collapsed yesterday.” and they did a scan and the tumor has grown and it’s inoperable and he doesn’t have much time left and he keeps asking for you and I thought you should know and Mike felt the world tilt sideways and he grabbed the doorframe to keep from falling.
How long? Mike managed to say and Elena shook her head and said maybe a few weeks maybe less and we’re keeping him comfortable but there’s nothing more we can do. And Mike closed his eyes and he was back in Bella’s room hearing those same words and feeling that same crushing helplessness. And he wanted [music] to scream and break things and curse God for being so cruel.
I’ll come, Mike said, [music] and his voice was barely a whisper. Just give me a minute. and Elellanena nodded and waited while he splashed water on his face and put on clean clothes and tried to pull himself together enough to face [music] a dying child who thought of him as a friend. The drive to the hospital was silent and Mike’s mind was racing with memories of Tommy’s smile and Tommy’s laugh and Tommy’s hand in his and Tommy saying, “Mr. Mike, you’re my best friend.
” And Mike wondered how many more children he was going to have to watch die before God decided he had suffered enough. Tommy was lying in his hospital bed looking small and pale and fragile. And when he saw Mike, his whole face lit up, and he said, “Mr. Mike, you came and I told them you would come because you promised you would always come back.
” And Mike had to blink back tears as he sat down next to the bed [music] and took Tommy’s small hand in his. “Hey, buddy,” Mike said, and he tried to keep his voice steady. “I heard you weren’t feeling so good, and I came to check on you.” And Tommy nodded solemnly and said, “The doctor said the thing in my head is getting bigger and it’s going to make me go to sleep forever, but I’m not scared because my grandma is in heaven and she makes the best cookies and she promised to save some for me.
” Mike’s heart shattered into a million pieces and he couldn’t speak. So, he just squeezed Tommy’s hand and Tommy said, “Mr. Mike, will you be sad when I go to sleep forever? because I don’t want you to be sad and I want you to promise me you’ll still build towers even when I’m not here to knock them down.
And Mike couldn’t hold back the tears anymore and they rolled down his face as he said, [music] “I promise, buddy. And I’ll build the biggest tower in the whole world just for you.” Tommy smiled and said, “Good, because you’re my best friend, [music] and I love you, Mr. Mike.” And Mike said, “I love you, too, Tommy.

” And it was the first time he had said those words to anyone since Bella died. [music] And it hurt so much. But it also felt like something cracked open inside him [music] and a tiny bit of light crept in. Mike spent every day at the hospital here after that sitting with Tommy [music] and reading him stories and playing quiet games and watching movies on the little TV in his room.
And Tommy’s parents were always there too, looking exhausted and terrified and grateful. all at the same time. And Mike understood exactly how they felt because he had been in their shoes not so long ago. Elellanena checked on Tommy constantly, and she always stopped to talk to Mike and bring him coffee and ask if he needed anything.
and Mike found himself actually answering her questions instead of pushing her away because something had shifted inside him when Tommy got sick and he didn’t have the energy to keep up his walls anymore. One night when Tommy was sleeping and his parents had gone to the cafeteria to get food, Mike was sitting alone in the room and Elena came in and sat down next to him and they watched Tommy breathe for a long time without saying anything.
And then Elellanena said, “I know you blame me for Bella and you have every right to, but I want you to know that I think about her every single day and I keep her picture in my office and she was one of the bravest kids I ever knew.” Mike felt tears prick his eyes and he said, “She was brave and she was funny and she was kind and she was my whole world.
And when she died, I [music] died, too. And I’ve just been going through the motions ever since.” waiting for my body to catch up with my heart. And Elena turned to look at him with those dark eyes that saw too much. And she said, “What do you mean waiting for your body to catch up?” And Mike realized he had said too much, but he was so tired of carrying this secret alone.
I’m going to die on March 15th,” Mike said, [music] and his voice was flat and emotionless. “Exactly 1 year after Bella and I have it all planned out, and I’ve been counting down the days, [music] and nothing is going to stop me, not even you.” And Elena’s face went white, and she grabbed his arm and said, “Mike, no, you can’t do that, and I won’t let you.
” And Mike laughed bitterly and said, “You can’t stop me, and no one can stop me, and I don’t [music] want to be stopped because I want to be with my daughter.” Elellanena was shaking, and tears were running down her face. And she said, “Mike, please listen to me because Bella wouldn’t want this, and she would want you to live, and she would want you to be happy, and you can’t throw your life away.
” And Mike shook his head and said, “You didn’t know her, and you don’t get to tell me what she would want, and I’m done talking about this.” And he stood up and walked out of the room, leaving Elellanena sitting there with her hand over her mouth and her shoulders shaking with sobs. Mike went home that night, and he felt strangely empty, like confessing his plan to Elena had drained something out of him.
and he lay on his mattress and stared at the ceiling and waited [music] for sleep that wouldn’t come. And he thought about Tommy and Elellanena and Bella and death and life. And he wondered if he had made a mistake by telling her. The next morning, Mike went back to the hospital, expecting Elellanena to have called the police or told someone about his plan.
But when he got to Tommy’s room, everything was normal. And Elellanena was there checking Tommy’s vitals. And she looked at Mike with red rimmed eyes, [music] but she didn’t say anything about their conversation. And Mike realized she was keeping his secret, even though it was clearly eating her alive. Days passed and Tommy got weaker and the light in his eyes started to dim.
And Mike felt the familiar helplessness creeping over him. But he refused to leave because he had promised [music] and he wasn’t going to break another promise to another child. Oh, not again. [music] Not ever. Tommy’s parents were falling apart and Mike found himself comforting them, which was strange because he was the last person who should be comforting anyone, but he knew what they were going through.
And sometimes just having someone who understood [music] was enough. One afternoon, Tommy woke up from a nap and looked at Mike with those big blue eyes and said, “Mr. Mike, I had a dream about a little girl, and she said her name was Bella.” And she said she was your daughter and she told me to tell you something.
And Mike’s heart stopped beating in his chest and he couldn’t breathe. And he whispered, “What did she say, Tommy? What did she tell you?” Tommy smiled and said, “She said to tell you that she’s okay and she’s happy and she doesn’t want you to be sad anymore. And she said she’ll wait for you, but not yet because you still have things to do.” And she said she loves you, Daddy.
And Mike broke down completely and buried his face in his hands and sobbed like he hadn’t sobbed since the day Bella died. Elellanena came running in when she heard him crying, and she saw him hunched over next to Tommy’s bed, and she wrapped her arms around him and held him while he fell apart. And Tommy reached out his small hand and patted Mike’s head and said, “It’s okay, Mr.
Mike.” And Bella said, “You’re going to be okay.” And Mike didn’t know if he believed in dreams or messages from heaven. But in that moment, he felt something shift in his chest like a locked door had opened just a crack. That night, Elellanena insisted on driving Mike home because he was in no shape to drive.
And she walked him up to his apartment and made him tea and sat with him on his mattress on the floor because he didn’t have any furniture. and she said, “Mike, I’m not going to pretend I understand what you’re going through, but I’m here and I’m not going anywhere. And whatever you need, I’m going to try to give it to you.” Mike looked at her and for the first time, he really saw her not as the doctor who failed to save his daughter, but as a person who was trying so hard to help him.
And he said, “Why do you care so much about me? because I’ve been nothing but awful to you and I blamed you for Bella’s death and I’ve pushed you away at every turn. So why won’t you just give up on me like everyone else? Elellanena was quiet for a moment and then she said, “Because I see something in you, Mike.
” And I see a man who loves deeply and hurts [music] deeply and who has so much to give. If he would just let himself and I see someone worth fighting for, even if he doesn’t see it in himself. and I know what it’s like to want to give up because I’ve been there, too. Mike frowned and said, “What do you mean you’ve been there, too?” And Elena took a deep breath and said, “When I was 25, my little brother died in a car accident, and I was the one driving.
And I blamed myself for years. And I tried to end my life twice before I finally got help. and I’m only telling you this because I want you to know that I understand the darkness you’re living in and I also know there’s a way out. Mike stared at her and he felt something crack inside him because here was this woman who had been through her own hell and clawed her way back and she was sitting on his floor trying to save him [music] and he didn’t deserve it but she was doing it anyway.
I’m so sorry about your brother, Mike said. And Elena nodded and said, “His name was Marco and he was 22 and he wanted to be a musician and he was the funniest person I ever [music] knew and losing him nearly destroyed me. But I survived and I became a doctor because I wanted to help people and I wanted his death to mean something even though I know that’s probably stupid.
” Mike shook his head and said, [music] “It’s not stupid and it’s actually beautiful.” And Elena smiled sadly and said, “I’m not telling you this to compare our pain because grief isn’t a competition. And I’m telling you because I want you to know that it’s possible to survive, even when you don’t want to.
[music] And it’s possible to find meaning even in the worst tragedy. And I believe you can do it, too.” They sat in silence for a while. And then Elena stood up and said, “I should go because it’s late and you need to sleep, but I’ll see you tomorrow at the hospital.” And she leaned down and kissed his forehead softly.
And then she was gone. And Mike sat there touching the spot where her lips had been and feeling confused and scared and something else he couldn’t quite name. The next morning, Mike woke up feeling different somehow, like something had shifted in the night, and he showered and shaved for the first time in weeks. And he put on clean clothes, and he drove to the hospital.
And when he walked into Tommy’s room, Elellanena looked at him and smiled and said, “You look better today.” And Mike said, “I feel a little better.” And it was the truth. Tommy was having a good day, which meant he was awake and alert and wanted to play. And Mike sat with him and they built towers out of blocks, even though Tommy’s hands were shaky and weak.
And every time the tower fell, Tommy laughed and said, “Again, Mr. Mike again.” And Mike built it again and again until Tommy got tired and had to rest. Over the next few days, Mike found himself thinking about what Tommy had said about Bella’s message. And he found himself thinking about what Elellanena had said about surviving and finding meaning.
And he found himself thinking about the plan he had made to die on March 15th. And for the first time since Bella’s death, he felt doubt creeping in around the edges of his certainty. He was still going to do it, of course, because he had made a promise to himself. And he had been counting down the days for so long that he couldn’t imagine any other ending.
But the doubt was there now, like a small seed planted in rocky soil, and he didn’t know if it would grow or wither, but he knew it existed. One week later, Tommy took a turn for the worse, and his breathing became labored, and his parents called in the priest, and everyone gathered around his bed, and Mike held Tommy’s hand and tried not to fall apart because he had to be strong for this little boy who had given him so much without even knowing it.
Tommy opened his eyes one last time and looked at Mike and said, “Don’t be sad, Mr. Mike, because I’m going to see your Bella and I’m going to tell her how much you love her and we’re going to play blocks together until you come.” And then he closed his eyes and took one last breath and was gone. And Mike felt his heart shatter all over again.
He didn’t remember leaving the hospital or driving home, but somehow he ended up in his apartment on the floor with a bottle of whiskey, and he drank until he couldn’t feel anything. And then he drank some more. And when Elellanena knocked on his door, he didn’t answer because he couldn’t face anyone, not even her.
Elellanena let herself in with the key he had given her weeks ago for emergencies. And she found him on the floor surrounded by empty bottles. And she didn’t say anything. She just sat down next to him and held his hand and let him cry and scream and curse. God. And when he finally ran out of energy, she helped him to his mattress and covered him with a blanket and lay down next to him and held him until he fell asleep.
Mike woke up the next morning with the worst hangover of his life. And Elena was gone, but there was coffee on the counter and [music] a note that said, “I’m at the hospital, but call me if you need me, and please don’t do anything stupid.” And Mike almost laughed at the understatement because his whole life had been stupid ever since Bella died.
[music] He didn’t go to the hospital that day or the next day or the day after that. And he lay in his apartment and grieved for Tommy and grieved for Bella and grieved for himself and the life he had lost and the future he would never have. Elellanena came by every evening to check on him and bring him food and make sure he was still alive.
And she never pushed him to talk, but she was always there, steady and patient and waiting. One night, about a week after Tommy’s death, Elellanena showed up with Chinese takeout, and they sat on the floor eating out of the containers. And Lena said, “Tommy’s parents asked me to give you something.” and she pulled out a small box and handed it to Mike.
He opened it and inside was a wooden block with letters painted on it that [music] spelled Mike. And Mike remembered Tommy painting this block months ago as a gift. And now it was all he had left of the little boy who had called him his best friend and loved him unconditionally. They also wanted me to tell you, Elellanena said softly, that Tommy talked about you constantly and that you made his last months the happiest of his life and they’re grateful beyond words for the time you spent with him.
And Mike clutched the block to his chest [music] and let the tears fall because Tommy deserved to be mourned and remembered and loved. That night, Mike made a decision. And it wasn’t the big decision about March 15th, but it was a smaller decision that felt just [music] as important. And he looked at Elena and said, “I want to go back to the hospital, and I want to be there for the other kids because Tommy would have wanted that.
And I think Bella would have wanted that, too.” And Elena’s face lit up with hope. And she hugged him tight and said, “I’m so proud of you, Mike, and I’ll be there with you every step of the way.” The next morning, Mike walked back into the pediatric oncology ward and Sophia ran up to him and threw her arms around his waist and [music] said, “Mr.
Mike, you came back and we missed you so much.” And Marcus gave him a fist bump and said, “Good to see you, man.” And the twins, Rosa and Maria, showed him drawings they had made for him. And Mike felt something warm bloom in his chest that [music] had nothing to do with sadness. Elellanena watched from across the room with a small smile on her face.
And Mike caught her eye and nodded, and she nodded back, and it felt like something had changed between them, something that had been growing slowly without either of them noticing. Mike threw himself into his work at the hospital, and he spent every day with the kids playing games and reading stories and listening to their fears and hopes and dreams.
[music] and he found that being there for them helped ease the pain in his own heart. He started talking to the parents too and sharing his own experience with Bella and offering what comfort he could. And he found that his grief could be useful, [music] that it could help others feel less alone in their own darkness. Months passed and Mike’s community service hours were completed.
[music] But he kept coming back as a volunteer because he couldn’t imagine his life without these kids and this work. And he realized that Elellanena had been right about finding meaning in tragedy even though he hadn’t wanted to hear it at the time. Elellanena and Mike grew closer with each passing [music] week, and they started having dinner together after work and talking for hours about everything and nothing.
[music] And Mike found himself laughing more and drinking less and thinking about the future for the first time in years. One night, they were sitting on the roof of the hospital watching the sunset, and Elena said, “Mike, [music] can I ask you something personal?” And Mike said, “You can ask me anything.” And Elena took a deep breath and said, “Are you still planning to die on March 15th because that’s only 2 months away and I need to know.” Mike was silent for a long time.
And then he said, “I honestly don’t know anymore because part of me still wants to be with Bella, but another part of me has started to wonder if maybe she really did send me that message through Tommy. And maybe she really does want me to live.” And Elena reached over and took his hand and said, “I think she wants you to live, Mike.
And I think Tommy wants you to live. And I know I want you to live because I can’t imagine my life without you in it.” Mike looked at her and something passed between them. Something electric and inevitable. And he said, “Elena, I think I might be falling in love with you. And that terrifies me because I haven’t loved anyone since Sophia left.
and I don’t know if I’m capable of it anymore.” And Elena smiled and said, “I think I might be falling in love with you, too, and it terrifies me, too, but I’ve learned that the things worth having are always a little terrifying.” Mike leaned in and kissed her, and it was soft and gentle and full of promise. And when they pulled apart, Elellanena said, “Please don’t die, Mike, because I just found you and I’m not ready to lose you.
” >> [music] >> And Mike said, “I’ll try and that’s the best I can offer right now.” And Elellanena nodded and said, “I’ll take it.” February came and Mike was officially dating Elena and he had moved into a real apartment with actual furniture and he was volunteering at the hospital 5 days a week and he was going to therapy twice a week [music] and he was slowly putting his life back together piece by piece.
But March 15th was getting closer and the old thoughts started creeping back and the darkness started whispering in his ear and Mike found himself lying awake at night thinking about Bella and the plan and the promise he had made to himself. Elellanena noticed that something was wrong and she asked him about it and Mike admitted that he was struggling and Elellanena held him and said, “I’m here and whatever you’re feeling is valid, but please talk to me instead of shutting me out.
” And Mike tried to talk about it, but the words got stuck in his throat. One week before March 15th, Mike had a dream about Bella. And in the dream, she was grown up, maybe 16 or 17, with long dark hair and her mother’s eyes. And she was beautiful. And she said, “Daddy, I love you and I miss you, but it’s not time yet.
And you have so much left to do, [music] and I’ll be here when you’re ready, but please don’t rush.” And Mike woke up crying and shaking, and something inside him broke open. He called Elena at 3:00 in the morning and she came over immediately and he told her about the dream and he said, “I don’t think I can do it anymore because I keep getting these messages or [music] at least I think they’re messages and Bella keeps telling me to live and I don’t know what to believe, but I know I don’t want to leave you.
” And Elellanena held him and cried with him [music] and said, “Thank God, Mike. Thank God.” The next morning, Mike drove to the cemetery and stood at Bella’s grave for the first time in months. And he said, “Baby girl, I don’t know if you can hear me, and I don’t know if those dreams are really from you, but I’ve decided to live because I think that’s what you want.
And I’m going to try to be happy because I think that would make you happy. And I’m going to love Elena [music] because I think you would have loved her, too. And I’m going to help other kids because that’s how I’m going to honor you.” and the wind blew through the trees and Mike could have sworn he heard a child’s laugh carried on the breeze.
March 15th came and Mike was still alive and he spent the day at the hospital with the kids and Elena took him to dinner that night and they lit a candle for Bella and they talked about her and cried about her and celebrated the fact that Mike had chosen life. That night, Mike asked Elena to move in with him, and she said yes, and they fell asleep in each other’s arms.
And for the first time in years, Mike didn’t dream about death. He dreamed about the future. Spring turned to summer, and summer turned to fall, and Mike and Elena built a life together, and Mike started a nonprofit in Bella’s name that provided support and resources for families dealing with childhood cancer.
And the work was hard but meaningful. And every day he felt like he was making a difference. One year after Mike had decided to live, he stood at Bella’s grave again. But this time, Elellanena was beside him holding his hand, and he said, “Hey, baby girl. It’s been 2 years now since you left, and I miss you every single day, but I’m okay, and I’m happy, and I’m doing good things in your name, and I hope you’re proud of me.
” And Elena squeezed his hand and said, “She’s definitely proud of you, Mike. And so am I.” That night, Mike took Elena to their favorite restaurant. And after dinner, he got down on one knee and pulled out a ring and said, “Ellanena, you saved my life in every way a person can be saved. [music] And I want to spend the rest of my days loving you and building a life with you and honoring Bella’s memory with you.
So, will you marry me? And Elena started crying and nodding and she [music] said, “Yes, Mike. Yes, a thousand times. Yes.” And the whole restaurant erupted in applause. They got married 6 months later in a small ceremony at the hospital chapel because that was where their story had really begun. And all the kids from the ward came and Sophia was the flower girl and Marcus was the ring bearer.
and the twins sang a song they had written themselves and it [music] was perfect and beautiful and exactly what they both wanted. Mike’s ex-wife Sophia sent a card congratulating them and saying she was glad Mike had found happiness and Mike felt no anger or resentment toward her anymore because he understood that grief affected everyone differently and she had done what she needed to survive just like he had.
The nonprofit grew bigger every year and Mike hired staff and opened offices in three different cities and they helped thousands of families. And Mike gave speeches [music] and raised money and became a voice for parents who had lost children and he finally felt like his pain had a purpose. Elellanena was promoted to head of the pediatric oncology department and she implemented new protocols [music] and pushed for better treatments.
And she never lost her compassion for her patients even after years of watching children suffer and die. And Mike loved her more every single day for her strength and dedication. 3 years after they got married, Elellanena came home from work with a strange look on her face. And Mike asked what was wrong. And she sat him down and took his hands and said, “Mike, I have something to tell you, and I don’t know how you’re going to feel about it.
” And Mike felt fear grip his heart because he thought she was sick or dying or leaving him. But then Elena smiled through her tears and said, “I’m pregnant, Mike, and we’re going to have a baby.” And Mike felt the world stop spinning and his heart stopped beating. And then everything rushed back in a wave of joy and terror and disbelief.
And he grabbed Elena and held her tight and said, “Are you sure? And is this real? And we’re really having a baby?” And Elellena laughed and said, “Yes, we’re really having a baby, and it’s real, and I’m sure.” Mike was terrified in a way he hadn’t been since Bella got sick because what if something went wrong? And what if the baby got sick? And what if he had to go through that pain again? And he couldn’t sleep for days thinking about all the terrible things that could happen.
Elellanena understood his fear because she shared it. And she said, “Mike, we can’t live our lives being afraid of what might happen because if we do that, we’ll miss all the good things. And this baby is a gift. and we’re going to love it and protect it and hope for the best [music] and deal with whatever comes.
And Mike knew she was right, but it was hard to let go of the fear. The pregnancy was difficult. And Elena had mourning sickness for months, and she was exhausted all the time, and Mike worried constantly, but he also felt something he hadn’t felt in years, which was hope for the future and excitement about what was to come.
They found out they were having a girl and Mike cried when he saw the ultrasound because she looked like a tiny alien, but she was his tiny alien and he already loved her more than he thought possible. They argued about names for weeks and Mike wanted to name her after Bella, but Elena gently suggested that might [music] be too painful and maybe they should give her a name that was all her own.
And Mike eventually agreed because Elena was right. [music] And this baby deserved her own identity, not the weight of her dead sister’s memory. They finally decided on the name Giana, which meant God is gracious. And Mike thought that was perfect because God had been gracious to him even when he hadn’t deserved it and had given him a second chance at life and love and family.
Elellanena went into labor 3 weeks early and Mike was terrified as he rushed her to the hospital and held her hand through hours of contractions and pushed down his panic every time the monitors beeped or the nurses looked concerned. But then at 3:15 in the morning, Giana Rose Stacks [music] came screaming into the world with a full head of dark hair and her mother’s nose and her father’s stubborn chin.
And Mike held her for the first time and felt his heart expand to make room for this new love that was different from his love for Bella, but just as powerful. He looked at Elena exhausted and sweaty and beautiful, and he said, “Thank you for saving me, and thank you for loving me, and thank you for giving me this incredible gift.
” And Elena smiled weakly and said, “Thank you for staying alive to meet her.” And they both cried happy tears while Giana slept peacefully in Mike’s arms. The first few months were hard with sleepless nights and endless diaper changes and Elena going back to work too soon because she couldn’t stand to be away from her patients and Mike learning how to be a father again after so many years.
But there were also moments of pure joy, like Giana’s first smile and her first laugh, and the way she grabbed Mike’s finger and held on tight like she never wanted to let go. And every day, Mike fell more in love with his daughter [music] and his wife and his life. Giana grew fast, and before Mike knew it, she was crawling and then walking and then running.
and she was curious about everything and fearless and funny [music] and she reminded Mike of Bella in some ways, but she was also completely her own person [music] with her own personality and quirks. Mike told Giana about her big sister when she was old enough to understand. And they visited Bella’s grave together and Giana would leave flowers and little drawings and she would say, “Hi, Bella.
I’m your baby sister and daddy says you were really brave and I wish I could have met you. And Mike’s heart would break and heal at the same time. The years passed quickly as they do when you’re happy and busy. And Mike watched Giana grow into a smart and kind and beautiful young girl who loved animals and art and making people laugh.
And he was so proud of her he thought his heart might burst. When Giana was 7 years old, the same age Bella was when she died, Mike had a moment of panic, and he checked her constantly for signs of illness, and took her to the doctor for every little cough, and Elena had to sit him down and remind him that fear was not the same as love, and that he needed to let Guyana live without the shadow of his anxiety hanging over her.
Mike started seeing his therapist more often, and he worked through his fears and learned to trust that the universe wasn’t going to take another daughter from him just because it could. And slowly, he relaxed and let Giana be a normal kid with normal scraped knees and normal childhood illnesses that weren’t cancer. Elellanena continued her work at the hospital and she lost patients [music] and mourned them and kept going because that’s what doctors do.
And Mike supported her through the hard days and celebrated with her on the good days. And they built a partnership based on understanding and respect [music] and deep abiding love. The nonprofit that Mike had started in Bella’s name became one of the largest childhood cancer support organizations in the country.
And they helped tens [music] of thousands of families and funded research and advocated for better treatments. And Bella’s legacy lived on in every child they helped. Mike gave a speech at a fundraising gala when Giana was 10 years old and he stood on stage in front of 500 people and he said, “15 years ago, I lost my daughter Bella to cancer and I wanted to die and I made a plan to end my life exactly 1 year after she passed because I couldn’t imagine living in a world without her.
But then I met some people who refused to give up on me. And I fell in love again. And I found purpose and meaning and hope. And I’m standing here today [music] because of them. And because I believe Bella wanted me to live. And I want everyone in this room to know that if you’re struggling and if you’re thinking about giving up, please don’t because there is light on the other side of the darkness, even if you can’t see it yet.
And the crowd gave him a standing ovation. and Elena was crying in the front row and Giana was next to her beaming with pride. After the gala, Mike and Elena went home and they put Giana to bed and they sat on the couch together and Elena said, “I’m so proud of you. Mike and Bella would be proud of you, too.” And Mike said, “I couldn’t have done any of this without you, and you literally saved my life.
” And Elena kissed him and said, “We [music] saved each other.” That night, Mike had a dream about Bella, and she was beautiful and grown up and surrounded by light. And she said, “Daddy, you did good, and I’m so happy, and I love watching you live, and I love my baby sister, and I love Elena, and I’ll see you again someday, but not for a long, long time.
” And Mike woke up with tears on his face. But they were happy tears. More years passed and Giana graduated from high school and then college. And she decided to become a nurse because she wanted to help sick children like her big sister had been. And Mike cried at her graduation and told everyone who would listen that his daughter was going to change the world.
Elellanena retired from the hospital at 65 and she and Mike traveled the world together and visited all the places they had always wanted to see. and they held hands and laughed and made new memories while honoring the old ones. Mike was 73 years old when the doctor told him his heart was failing and he had maybe 6 months to live.
And Mike wasn’t scared because he had lived a full life and he had loved and been loved and he had made a difference and he was ready to see Beller again. He spent his last months surrounded by family and friends. And Giana came home with her husband and their two children. And Mike held his grandchildren and told them stories about their aunt Bella and made them promise to be brave and kind and to never give up, no matter how hard things got.
Elellanena was by his side every moment and she held his hand and read to him and reminded him of all the wonderful things they had done together. And Mike told her, “You are the best thing that ever happened to me besides my daughters, and I thank God every day that you were stubborn enough to save me.” On the last night of his life, [music] Mike had one final dream.
And in the dream he was walking through a beautiful garden full of flowers and sunshine. And at the end of the path stood Bella [music] just as he remembered her with her dark hair and her bright eyes and her gaptothed smile. And she ran to him and jumped into his arms and said, “Daddy, you’re here and I missed you so much.
” And Mike held her tight and said, “I missed you too, baby girl, every single day.” And Bella said, “Come on, Daddy. There’s so much I want to show you. And she took his hand and led him into the light. Mike Stax died peacefully in his sleep at 73 years old with his wife holding one hand and his daughter holding the other and his grandchildren asleep on the bed beside him.
And the last expression on his face was a smile. At his funeral, Giana stood up and spoke about her father. And she said, “My dad was the bravest man I ever knew. Not because he wasn’t afraid, but because he was afraid, and he kept going anyway. And he taught me that love is stronger than death, and hope is stronger than despair.
And that even when the darkness feels overwhelming, there is always a reason to choose life. And I will carry his lessons with me forever. [music] and I will pass them on to my children, and they will pass them on to theirs, and my father and my [music] sister will never be forgotten.” Elna lived another 10 years after Mike died, and she spent those years writing a book about their love story and working with the nonprofit and spoiling her grandchildren.
And every year on the anniversary of Mike’s death, she visited his grave, which was right next to Bella’s, [music] and she told them both about everything that was happening. And she knew they were together and happy and waiting for her. When Elena finally joined them, she was 83 years old, and she died in her sleep, just like Mike had.
And Giana found her the next morning with a peaceful expression on her face and a photograph of Mike clutched to her chest. The nonprofit that Mike and Elena had built continued long after they were gone. And it helped millions of families and changed [music] laws and funded research that led to breakthrough treatments. And Giana ran it for 20 years before passing it on to her own children who passed it on to theirs.
Bella’s legacy and Mike’s legacy and Elellanena’s legacy lived on in every child who survived cancer and every family who found support [music] and every person who chose life when they wanted to choose death and the ripples of their love spread out across the world touching lives they would never know.
And somewhere beyond the veil of this world, [music] in a place where there is no pain and no sickness and no death, [music] Mike and Bella and Elena were together and they were happy and they were watching over the family they had left behind. And they were proud of everything [music] they had built and everyone they had loved. This is Mr.
Hope reminding you that sometimes the darkest nights lead to the brightest mornings. that the people we lose never truly leave us because they live on in every kind act we do in their memory. That grief is not a sign of weakness but a sign of how deeply we loved. That the doctor who couldn’t save your yesterday might be the angel who saves your tomorrow.
That children teach us more about courage than any book ever could. That building towers just to watch them fall is sometimes the whole point. that when a 5-year-old boy tells you about a message from heaven, you should probably listen. That the people who refuse to give up on us are often the ones who save our lives. [music] That choosing to live when everything inside you wants to die is the bravest thing a human being can do.
That love can find you in the last place [music] you expect it, like a hospital chapel or a pediatric cancer ward. That your pain can become your purpose if you let it. that the promise you make to a dying child might be the promise that keeps you alive. [music] That March 15th can be the day you almost died or the day you decided to really live.
That second chances are real and redemption [music] is possible and hope is never truly gone even when you can’t see it. May your grief become [music] your gift to others. May your scars become your story. May the children you’ve lost watch over the children you’ll help. And may you always remember that keeping a date with [music] death is optional, but keeping a date with life is a choice you can make every single day.
Thank you for watching. I love you all. God bless you all.
