🏛️ Former Crimson Tide Quarterback AJ McCarron Announces Run for Alabama Lieutenant Governor

MONTGOMERY, AL — Former University of Alabama star quarterback AJ McCarron is trading the football field for politics. The three-time national champion and Crimson Tide legend officially announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama, marking one of the most surprising entries in the state’s 2026 election race.

McCarron, 35, said in a statement Friday that his campaign will focus on “faith, family, and freedom” — the same values he says guided him throughout his football career.

“I’ve spent my life leading teams under pressure, uniting people toward a common goal,” McCarron said. “Now, I want to do the same for Alabama — to fight for working families, better schools, and a government that actually listens.”

McCarron, who led the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships in 2011 and 2012 under Coach Nick Saban, later spent several seasons in the NFL, playing for teams including the Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Texans.

Political analysts say McCarron’s name recognition and deep Alabama roots could make him a formidable candidate, especially among conservative voters and Crimson Tide loyalists.

The former quarterback has not yet disclosed whether he will run as a Republican or Independent, but his early campaign messaging emphasizes patriotism, small government, and protecting parental rights — themes that resonate strongly in Alabama politics.

“He’s a hometown hero stepping into a political arena that loves a good football story,” said Dr. Melissa Grant, a political science professor at Auburn University. “The challenge will be proving he’s more than just a sports figure.”

McCarron is expected to officially kick off his campaign next month with a rally in Tuscaloosa, where his football legend first began.
