Rewatching the Infamous Prince Andrew Interview: Emily Maitlis Reflects Six Years Later

Nearly six years after her historic 2019 interview with Prince Andrew, Emily Maitlis, co-host of Global’s The News Agents podcast, has revisited the conversation and shared new insights about what she noticed upon rewatching it in full for the first time.

Maitlis described how much she missed during the initial broadcast, noting inconsistencies in Andrew’s account. Regarding a photograph of Andrew with Virginia Giuffre, he allegedly gave six different explanations for why it was or wasn’t him, ranging from questioning the hand in the image to claiming he had never been upstairs in Ghislaine Maxwell’s Belgravia home. “It was like trying to hold jelly,” Maitlis said, recalling how Andrew seemed to throw out every possible excuse in the hope she would stop questioning him.

She also highlighted the troubling contrast between Andrew’s role as a patron of a child abuse charity and his casual description of Jeffrey Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse as “like a railway station,” with people constantly coming and going. “If somebody’s home is a railway station, what on earth’s going on?” Maitlis remarked.

New details have also emerged regarding Andrew’s friendship with Epstein. Emails released last weekend revealed he met Epstein in early 2020, contradicting his claims that he had ended the friendship months earlier. Maitlis noted that Andrew’s main concern appeared to be avoiding scrutiny, rather than genuinely severing ties.

The timing of Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, Nobody’s Girl, adds another layer of significance. The excerpts describe alleged orgies involving Andrew, Epstein, and several young women, some of whom were reportedly too young to consent and did not speak English. Maitlis emphasized the broader implications: “It’s about powerful men shutting down vulnerable women and never being held accountable… It goes much wider, much deeper. It is more global than anyone yet realizes.”

The interview and the revelations from Giuffre’s memoir continue to overshadow the royal family, even as King Charles undertakes historic visits abroad. Discussions about Andrew’s titles, his public role, and potential legal consequences remain unresolved. While some suggest he should step back from public life, the enduring scandal has kept his actions—and their implications—firmly in the spotlight.

Emily Maitlis concluded that revisiting the interview provided a new perspective on Andrew’s behavior and highlighted the ongoing consequences of abuse of power. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” she said. “There are so many stories we haven’t yet heard.”
