🚨 Gavin Newsom Sues Trump Administration Over Halted EBT Benefits
SACRAMENTO — California Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that his administration is suing the Trump administration over the federal government’s decision to halt EBT benefits for low-income families during the ongoing government shutdown.
Newsom called the move “unconscionable,” arguing that federal funds are readily available and should be used to support vulnerable Americans rather than leaving them without food assistance.
“There is no excuse for letting families go hungry while the federal government sits on money that’s already allocated,” Newsom said in a statement. “Trump should be using these funds to feed people, not weaponize hunger for political gain.”
The lawsuit, filed in federal court, seeks an injunction to immediately restore EBT payments to California residents. Officials say the suspension of benefits has already affected hundreds of thousands of families across the state, leaving them unable to purchase essential groceries.
A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture, which administers the federal SNAP program, has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
Legal experts say the case could have national implications, as California is one of several states impacted by the suspension of benefits during the shutdown.
