SACRAMENTO — California Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that his administration is suing the Trump administration over the federal government’s decision to halt EBT benefits for low-income families during the ongoing government shutdown.
Newsom called the move “unconscionable,” arguing that federal funds are readily available and should be used to support vulnerable Americans rather than leaving them without food assistance.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court, seeks an injunction to immediately restore EBT payments to California residents. Officials say the suspension of benefits has already affected hundreds of thousands of families across the state, leaving them unable to purchase essential groceries.
A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture, which administers the federal SNAP program, has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
