‘Love & Hip Hop’ Star Masika Kalysha’s Estranged Husband, Jamar Champ, Dies in Wrong-Way Crash in Texas

HOUSTON — Jamar Champ, the estranged husband of Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood star Masika Kalysha, has died following a tragic wrong-way car crash in Houston, Texas. He was 38 years old.

According to a press release from the Houston Police Department (HPD), the fatal crash occurred shortly after 12 a.m. local time on Tuesday, October 28, on the Katy Freeway (Interstate 10 West).

Authorities said a silver BMW traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes collided head-on with a silver Tesla Cybertruck driven by Champ. The BMW caught fire upon impact, and the Cybertruck was subsequently struck by a blue Freightliner 18-wheeler truck.

HPD officials, Sgt. R. Dallas and Officer R. Young, confirmed that Champ was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the BMW also died at the scene, while the 18-wheeler driver was unharmed.

Investigators said an autopsy is being conducted to determine whether impairment played a role in the crash.

Champ, who was once a college football player at North Dakota State University, played one season for the team in 2005, according to KVRR.

Masika Kalysha Breaks Silence

Kalysha appeared to reference the heartbreaking news in a post on X (formerly Twitter) early Tuesday morning.

“God woke me up at 2 a.m. … I couldn’t go back to sleep,” she wrote. “I didn’t know why. God, I just got the worst news of my life. Please pray for me and my children.”

In an emotional Instagram video, Kalysha pleaded with media outlets and fans to be respectful and allow her family time to process the tragedy.

“I just respectfully ask that you don’t post until I do,” she said tearfully. “News travels fast to the kids — and even though my children don’t have social media, their friends do. I don’t want them finding out about this at school before I can tell them myself.”

Kalysha and Champ’s relationship had been private and occasionally tumultuous, though the two reportedly remained on amicable terms at the time of his death.

Fans, co-stars, and fellow entertainers have flooded Kalysha’s social media with messages of sympathy and support.

“Heartbreaking beyond words,” one commenter wrote. “Sending love and prayers to Masika and her family.”

The Houston Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
