‘Utterly Shameful’: Speaker Johnson Slams Rep. Katherine Clark Over Shutdown Remarks
WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is blasting House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) after she accused Republicans of using American families as “leverage” in the ongoing government shutdown standoff — calling her remarks “utterly shameful.”
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Johnson pushed back forcefully, arguing that Democrats are the ones refusing to negotiate in good faith to keep the government open.
“It’s utterly shameful for the Democratic Whip to say that Republicans are using American families as leverage,” Johnson said. “We’re fighting to restore fiscal sanity and stop the reckless spending that’s driving inflation and crushing working people.”
Clark’s earlier comments came during a press briefing in which she accused GOP leadership of prioritizing political wins over the livelihoods of millions of federal workers and families who would be affected by a shutdown.
“Republicans are holding the American people hostage to push their extreme agenda,” Clark said. “Families are being used as leverage in a political game — and they’re the ones who will pay the price.”
The sharp exchange highlights the deepening partisan rift as Congress races against the clock to avert a federal shutdown. With funding set to expire within days, both sides are digging in — Republicans demanding spending cuts and policy concessions, while Democrats insist on a “clean” funding bill to keep agencies running.
Johnson, who has faced pressure from his right flank to take a hard line, framed the GOP’s stance as a matter of principle, not politics.
“We’re here to do the people’s work, not rubber-stamp more Washington waste,” he said. “Democrats may not like it, but we’re not going to back down from doing what’s right.”
Political analysts say the war of words underscores the high stakes for both parties, with public frustration mounting over the gridlock in Washington. A prolonged shutdown could have serious economic consequences — from delayed paychecks for federal employees to disruptions in government services — and both sides are already preparing to assign blame.
As negotiations continue behind closed doors, the tone on Capitol Hill suggests little room for compromise.
