Pakistan Close In on Victory Over World Test Champions South Africa in Series Opener
Pakistan edged closer to a memorable win over reigning World Test Champions South Africa on Wednesday, as left-arm spinner Noman Ali spearheaded the hosts’ bowling attack on Day 4 of the first Test in Lahore.
Noman, who claimed six wickets in the first innings, continued his dominance by taking 4 for 69 in the second, leaving South Africa reeling at 137 for 6 — still 140 runs short of the 277-run target.

The veteran spinner struck a crucial blow by removing Dewald Brevis, who had been the visitors’ main hope in their uphill chase. Brevis played a valiant innings of 54 off 51 balls, featuring two towering sixes and four crisp boundaries before a sharply turning delivery from Noman beat his defense and clipped the stump.
“Brevis was beginning to look dangerous,” Pakistan captain Babar Azam said after the session. “Noman has been incredible. The way he used the surface and kept attacking the stumps — it was world-class.”
South Africa’s Struggle
South Africa began the day at 51 for 2, still facing an uphill battle. Their early hopes of a comeback were dashed within the first few overs when Shaheen Shah Afridi trapped Tony de Zorzi (16) with a fiery in-swinger that thudded into the batsman’s pads.
De Zorzi, who had scored a century in the first innings, looked unsettled from the start as Afridi extracted uneven bounce and movement under Lahore’s hazy morning skies.
Next to fall was Tristan Stubbs (2), who continued to struggle on a pitch offering sharp turn and unpredictable bounce. He prodded at a delivery from Noman Ali and edged it straight to Salman Ali Agha, who took a sharp catch at chest height at short cover.
With South Africa wobbling at 64 for 4, Brevis and Ryan Rickelton stitched together a steady 73-run stand off 98 balls to briefly halt Pakistan’s momentum. Rickelton batted with discipline, facing 145 deliveries for his 45 runs before spinner Sajid Khan broke the partnership moments before lunch. Agha, once again, displayed safe hands with a low catch near the surface.
Pakistan’s Spin Domination
The Lahore surface — dry, cracked, and increasingly responsive to spin — played right into Pakistan’s hands. Noman and Sajid bowled in tandem, keeping relentless pressure on the South African middle order.
Even as Kyle Verreynne tried to hold the innings together at 3 not out from 15 deliveries by lunch, chances kept coming Pakistan’s way. Imam-ul-Haq dropped a difficult opportunity close to the wicket after Noman found Verreynne’s outside edge with a sharply turning ball.
Pakistan’s bowlers, however, remained undeterred. With variable bounce making survival difficult, the hosts looked poised to wrap up the game early on Day 5 — or perhaps even before stumps if their momentum continued.
Brevis’s Brave Resistance
Brevis’s counterattack provided the only real resistance from South Africa. After surviving an early lbw scare from Noman’s first delivery, he shifted gears aggressively, taking the attack to the bowlers.
He lofted Noman straight down the ground for six and cracked two boundaries through cover in consecutive overs. His fifty came off just 51 balls — a bright spark in an otherwise gloomy chase for the Proteas. But his dismissal soon after reaching the milestone dealt a heavy blow to South Africa’s hopes.

“He’s an extraordinary talent,” South African captain Temba Bavuma said. “But the way the Pakistan spinners controlled the game, especially on this surface, made scoring very difficult. We’ll need a big effort from our tailenders tomorrow.”
Match Context and Historical Significance
If Pakistan completes the win, it would mark their first home Test victory over South Africa since 2021 and a significant step in their effort to rebuild dominance on home soil.
The match has also showcased the team’s renewed spin strength, with both Noman Ali and Sajid Khan combining for nine wickets so far in the second innings. Their success follows head coach Gary Kirsten’s recent emphasis on developing Pakistan’s spin depth to complement the pace attack led by Afridi.
“This is exactly the kind of performance we’ve been working toward,” Kirsten told reporters. “Control, consistency, and patience — that’s what Test cricket is about. Noman’s spell was the turning point.”
Conditions and Tactical Brilliance
The Lahore pitch, though criticized by some for deteriorating too quickly, has rewarded disciplined bowling. The ball gripped and turned sharply throughout the morning, forcing South Africa’s batters to rely heavily on backfoot play — a risky strategy against Pakistan’s left-arm spin duo.
Pakistan also benefited from sharp field placements and aggressive captaincy. Babar stationed catchers close on both sides of the bat, often surrounding new batsmen with four or five close-in fielders. The pressure paid off as South Africa’s batsmen succumbed to frustration and misjudged turn on several occasions.
Looking Ahead
As the teams head into Day 5, Pakistan needs four wickets to secure the win, while South Africa faces the daunting task of chasing 140 more runs on a treacherous pitch. With spin expected to play an even greater role under the heat, Noman Ali is poised to complete a 10-wicket match haul, which would likely earn him the Player of the Match award.
“Finishing the job won’t be easy,” Babar cautioned. “But our bowlers have shown the hunger and the discipline. One more strong session, and we can make Pakistan proud.”
