Tragedy in Illinois: Senator Darren Bailey’s Family Killed in Devastating Helicopter Crash

LOUISVILLE, ILLINOIS — The state of Illinois is reeling in grief following the devastating loss of four members of Senator and former gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey’s family, who were killed in a helicopter crash Wednesday evening in Montana.

Bailey’s campaign confirmed the victims as Zachary Bailey, Kelsey Bailey, and their children Veda (12) and Samuel (7). Their 10-year-old grandson, Finn, was not on board and is safe.

“Darren and Cindy Bailey are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” the family said in a statement Thursday. “They are finding comfort in their faith, family, and in the prayers of so many who love and care for them.”

A Community in Mourning

In the small town of Louisville, Illinois, where the Bailey family is deeply rooted, grief has spread through every church pew, school hallway, and neighborhood gathering. Local churches organized prayer vigils, and hundreds gathered to light candles and share memories of a family known for its kindness, generosity, and faith.

“We’ll be here every step of the way,” said one neighbor, her voice trembling. “They’ve given so much to this community — now it’s our turn to stand by them.”

The Crash and Ongoing Investigation

According to local authorities, the helicopter went down shortly after takeoff in rural Montana under still-unknown circumstances. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Officials said weather conditions were clear at the time, and no distress call was recorded before the aircraft disappeared from radar.

Faith and Strength Amid Loss

For many in southern Illinois, Darren Bailey’s public faith has long been a hallmark of his political and personal life. That faith, friends say, is now what sustains the family through their darkest hour.

“Darren and Cindy have always believed that God has a plan, even in suffering,” said Pastor Jim Reynolds of Louisville First Baptist Church. “They are leaning on that faith right now, surrounded by a community that loves them deeply.”

An Outpouring of Support

Messages of sympathy have poured in from across the state and nation, including from Governor J.B. Pritzker, Senator Dick Durbin, and several congressional leaders. Both Democrats and Republicans have expressed solidarity with the Bailey family, putting politics aside in the face of tragedy.

Illinois flags were lowered to half-staff at the state capitol Thursday night in memory of the victims.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of how precious life is,” said one mourner at the vigil. “The Bailey family’s faith and love have touched so many — and tonight, Illinois stands with them in prayer.”
